shareThere were a few copies floating around Ebay, which were in VHS and Laserdisc. That's probably your best bet. I had a copy on VHS but the wear and tear of 20 years has rendered it un-watchable.
What is it about the new world video version you like so much?
I honestly have never seen it which is why I was interested in buying it. I had heard it has different dialogue and alternate score, which I find interesting.
shareI owned the New World tape at one time and it doesn't have an alternate score or an alternate soundtrack. Going on my memory, the only difference is in the very beginning, when the title Demons pops up on screen, there's a demon growl that you don't hear on the DVD.
Quit that snifflin' or the boogeyman'll be gettin' ya.
Not to discount you, but I've heard from numerous sources that it in fact has an alternate score and some different dialogue. In any case, I'd still like to find out for myself.
shareIf there are in fact a few other differences they're so minor you wouldn't notice them anyway. Its not like an entirely different score is used or any of the rock songs are switched out for different ones. I think you'll be disappointed if that's what you're looking for.
Quit that snifflin' or the boogeyman'll be gettin' ya.
As I said, no offense, but you are the only person to tell me that there isn't much difference and either way I'd like to see for myself.
shareOh, I'm not dissuading you in the slightest, by all means, find out for yourself.

The 2 major differences are the voices of the druggies and small dialogue with Ken and Kathy. The entire dialogue and voices are different and its VERY noticable. The only other part that really stood out to me and also bothered me was When Kathy is starting to freak out that the "screams are real" Ken grabs her arm (on DVD) and says "Its the Dolby system" Dolby wasnt even in theaters back in 1984.
shareDolby goes all the way back to '71 with A Clockwork Orange. Demoni itself had it.

You might be right about when Dolby was around but thats not the live from the movie on the VHS. That wa sadded in on the DVD.
shareI have both the New World Video and the Anchor Bay version and I once made a list of every notable difference I could hear. I counted about 112. There is a staggering amount of times when the NWV has background music that is omitted in all other versions. The actual songs are the same. But there is so much more droning, atmospheric music throughout. Much of the dialogue is different, especially with the punks. But the average viewer probably isn't going to catch all of the subtle differences. But the NWV is definitely the one to have. And the scene where Rosemary attacks the lady in the room near the beginning of the film has music that is non existent in the Anchor Bay version. I really wish this version would be released on DVD. I can't believe this isn't a bigger topic. It's like watching a different film at times. The New World Video version is definitely worth finding.
shareAh I'm jealous! Anyway you could rip the NWV version and put it on DVD?

Did you ever find out if the difference between the New World Video version and the later DVD's are that noticeable? I have it on VHS and would consider transferring it to my computer and making a torrent of it. If it's worth it.
shareMostly soundtrack. It's worth making it a torrent.

Someone was kind enough to upload the version with the droning background music that akus_9185 mentioned. I really love the feel it adds to the movie. The main difference I noticed was the music when Rosemary's friend goes to check on her, Rosemary ripping that lady's scalp, and the music that plays when George and Cheryl kill the masked guy.
The version I first saw as a kid was released by Norstar Home Video and it's identical to the one posted. The only thing this version is missing is the background music when Kathy turns into a demon. It's the same music that plays when they kill the masked guy.
