It's been a while since I have seen the film however I am curious as to what would have happened if the hooker hadn't picked up the mask and have it accidentally scratch her. What was the plan? For the audience to watch the film and somehow an outbreak happen another way? Otherwise it would have been a simple viewing of a movie!

Well it was part of the Nostradamus prophecy? So I'm guessing it was bound to happen in some way.
Somebody else might have picked up and tried on the mask. The only way for the curse to start is through that mask.
Then again, the man with the half mask (the one that gave the tickets in the beginning) might have done something else.

I always assumed there was supernatural influence behind her picking it up and getting cut. She was compelled & junk.
