Audio tracks on the steel Book Blu-ray
Okay I have seen DEMONS through almost all of it's many incarnations and the new Blu-Ray Steelbook limited Edition with the original English Language Mono Track is the most faithful to the original version released in the U.S. via drive-in summer of 1986. It is the same audio soundtrack as the New World Home Video release which was the first version and most referenced version I have seen. It is also slightly different than the EP version that StarMaker put out in the early 90's when it purchased most of New World's library. (I do believe the Ascot entertainment group logo has been omitted from that VHS version.) This is definately the un-cut version and all gore scenes remain completely uncensored. It's actually a few seconds longer according to the liner notes although it is missing the Ascot banner at the beginning and no longer has an intermission card that was in the Italian version.
The best track in my opinion is the English Mono track; for those who loved the original unaltered under-score and song track version. I didn't notice any shifts in audio during the coke can scenes which are still pretty much in this movie! I am not sure what they changed during looping, but the cocaine in the Coke can scene is still very much intact although you cannot read the words Coca-Cola fully on the can in any shot. I assume the change in audio during this scene is pretty seamless.
Okay there are many differences in the soundtracks because I went back and I re-checked the audio on the Anchor Bay (non-Anamorphic) Letterboxed DVD's and VHS, which I also own. Also the Italian Language soundtrack has DIFFERENT music playing during different scenes! When they first try to escape the theater and are pulling down the doors that music cue has been changed to another hard rock song. Also when the theatre patron gets scalped by the Rosemary "Demon" the underscore is not present in the Italian version only the hard rock song which is also on the previous Anchor Bay versions. The 2-channel Dolby surround English language alternate track sounds better but is not the same as the original mono track.
I would say buy the steel book for the different tracks alone -- the Italian version and the 2-channel English stereo soundtrack have interesting subtle changes in under-score and heavy metal songs. While the English mono track for Americans who grew up watching this movie as a teen will bring back memories of what the Anchor Bay discs did not duplicate.
Then of course there is the Hi-Def transfer which is absolutely amazing in terms of color correction and clarity! And the wealth of extras! Well worth it if you are a die-hard fan, and what other kind of fan does DEMONS have?
