John's machete and the magnum rounds (spoilers)

Anybody notice that after his machete was confiscated, he took the time to take it with him to the helicopter?

Also, if he took the time to get the machete and Rhodes' two magnum revolvers, why didn't he take the multitude of rounds on the bandoleer? Just take the entire bandoleer and then no need to throw away the beautiful magnums. In fact, even though he ran out of ammo, why didn't John keep the guns in case he came across more ammo? I doubt they never will do more supply runs.

The machete was lying in the ground and only needed to be picked up, the guns were already in his hands, the bandolier was strapped round the unconscious captain and it would have took time to get it off, not to mention Rhodes might have woken up with John pulling it off him and time was kind of an issue, as to keeping the empty guns, they were just dead weight and in the next scene he has the other handgun back anyway, the one stolen from Torrez.
