Similarities to My Favorite Brunette
I watched the old Bob Hope picture My Favorite Brunette a few months before watching the "lost" Sam Raimi film Crimewave, and there are enough similarities that I wonder if the former was perhaps an influence on the latter.
Including:
-The "man about to be executed tells story in flashback mode" structure
-The hero's execution averted at the last minute by the sudden reappearance of the missing heroine
-The hero is pursued by cartoonish henchmen (in My Favorite Brunette it's Peter Lorre and Lon Chaney Jr.)
-Spoofing of the noir genre
-A non-traditional hero whom you might describe as a "sap", getting mixed up in a crazy/dangerous situation as a result of trying to win the leading lady's heart
Probably there are more that I'm forgetting.
