Reed Birney .... Vic Ajax

This guy hasnt done *beep* Why the hell was he picked for the Vic Ajax part over Bruce Campbell? I would bet this movie would sell DVD's like hotcakes if Bruce was in the main part.

I thought the same thing- but then Bruce is always better as the comedy wiseass, The Renaldo part was just hilarious. I'm not sure he could have been "nerdy" enough for the Vic part

I agree that the film would probably have been raised a goodly notch by having Mr. Campbell in the Ajax role. At the same time I feel the need to point out that Birney did a fine job and and suggest that -- at that point in time, Bruce Campbell had done pretty much *beep* as well -- certainly in the studio's perspective.

In hindsight, I would love to see a remake now that Raimi, Campbell and the Coen Bros. all have considerable cred. But given what was known at the time I can't fault the capitalist preference for Birney in that role. I don't think that he did anything detrimental to what the film required and was, I think, altogether appropriate.

The studios are a business and they made a business decision. If I could go back in time and actually have a say in the decision then that might be different, but otherwise -- just enjoy. And urge the contempraries of those decision-makers to produce a worthy DVD/Blu-Ray presentation of THIS work. I still enjoy my old VHS release of this film (backed-up to DVD of course) and am on the lookout for new projects these people are involved-in.

In the "Sullivan's Travels" tradition maybe the principals can go back to the studios and make the film that they had envisioned in the time of their innocence.

I feel that the main problem with the film is Reed Birney's miscasting as Vic. It seems obvious to me that the role was written for Campbell. I'm guessing that Raimi was overruled by the film's producers.
