The Creators of This Movie Were NOT Prophets

In the beginning, we learn that the setting of this movie is one of the moons of Saturn, which means that the story takes place several centuries in the future. The characters of the movie find a derelict space ship; they check its registration, and find that it is a WEST GERMAN ship. The creators of this movie actually thought that the division of Germany and of Europe would last for centuries and centuries! A similar mistake occurs in the original STAR TREK, where the Russki Chekhov recalls meeting a little old lady from LENINGRAD. That lady must have been extremely old if she could remember all the way back to when Saint Petersburg was saddled with that phony name.

And who is to say that situation will last? Russia could just as likely retake all they lost and then some in the intervening years. They are allready back to waving nukes at people.

reply

Unfortunately that is true; there are entirely too many Russian politicos with the soul of Dzhugachvili.

And the irony is that Dzhugachvili was not even Russian!

I must explain something. Chekov isn't saying that he actually met "an old lady from Leningrad". This is a take on the ongoing joke of the Sixties about "the little old lady from Pasadena". For example, a used-car salesman would say that a car had been driven only on Sundays by a little old lady from Pasadena. This became such a ubiquitous phrase that The Beach Boys AND Jan & Dean recorded a song by that title. You can listen to one version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRR_b5aDn6w&feature=fvst

Remember how Chekov was always saying that the Russians did/made/said something first or claimed that something was Russian when it obviously came from elsewhere. Well, that was another example of passing off one country's turn of phrase for Russian.

Remember, too, that Leningrad wasn't changed to Saint Petersburg" until 1991. Why should they ever guess that there might be a name change? After all, the WTC towers show up in movies that take place long after their destruction, including "Escape from New York".

You're right: Filmmakers (usually, but not always) are not prophets. However, Chekov's remark was a topical joke, with the alliteration adding to the humor.

I'd be surprised if anyone finds this Baby Boomer's ramblings interesting, but sometimes we oldsters just can't help ourselves.
