What does THE COLOR PURPLE refer to?

This is probably a no-brainer - either the title refers to the flowers Celie associated with what good memories she had as a child (ie running through the fields of flowers in front of her house) or the color of bruises.

Regardless, what are your interpretations?

I believe it refers to this one particular quote Shug says in the movie about cherishing even the smallest details of God's creation:

Shug: I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it.
