shareIt may have been wrong but that was the norm back then. What scene were you referring to though? Something mentioned in the book? Mister wasn't 50-something when her married Celie even though he was a grown man. And I saw that he married Harpo and Sofia, too.

As loads of folk have already said, that was just how society worked back then. If someone from the early 20th century was to come here they'd probably be shocked that unmarried people openly have sexual relationships and even that homosexuality has become socially acceptable, well for the most part anyway.
The Bible does not condem this any way, Joseph and Mary were probably about that age. It is also not seen as pedophillia in our culture. If a woman is "developed" but underage it is Statutory Rape. The law does not recognise that an underage girl is capable of consenting even they actually do, they have not consented by statute, hence the name statutory rape.
