Was Celie actually supposed to be really ugly?

The characters in this movie talk about Celie like she's hideous but I don't think she is. She's not a classic beauty but she's decent looking. However I wonder if that's just supposed to be the other characters (like Albert) being jerks or was it really supposed to be a story about an ugly woman?

she was ugly to me. of course they couldve found an uglier woman for the role but then it would be too distracting.

Bullies or abusers will tell their victim that they are ugly or something like that to bring them further down. After a while the victim believes it. It started for Celie when her father/stepfather told her repeatedly how ugly she was and she believed it, so she didn't "fix" up or didn't feel deserving to. He always told her what an ugly smile she had, that is why she always covered her mouth when she was happy and smiling.

You hear it enough you believe it and become it. I have seen plain women with no sense of style that I knew were being mistreated by their husbands become beautiful when they are able to get out of that situation.
