I don't know if this has been addressed BUT this line ALWAYS bothered me!!! "If you want a dead SON IN LAW you keep advising him like you been doing" HE WAS CELIE'S STEP SON NOT SON IN LAW

Hmmmmm. You are exactly correct! Harpo is her stepson.

True, but people didn't always make that distinction in that time period. Remember Celie didn't know that her father was really her STEPfather.
