Has a Chuck movie ever posted as high as a 6?

I was in high school when Code came out. I vividly remember that the movie hit number one for a number of weeks - something almost unheard of for a movie whose lead is a Karate champion. I also remember a number of notable critics - Roger Ebert in particular - proclaiming that this would be Chuck's breakout film, and that in the years to come Chuck would join the ranks of Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood as a serious actor, rather than just a stuntman with lines.

Well, it's more than twenty years later, and Chuck has certainly managed to stay employed and respectable (at least his career has been more consistent than Steven Seagal's), but he just as certainly has not joined the ranks of McQueen or Eastwood.

Additionally, no one seems to remember 'Code of Silence' any more than they remember, say, 'Forced Vengence' - which at the time of its release was considered little more than an extended fight scene with a few lines of dialog.

Finally, even the IMDB rating - 5.5 - doesn't suggest that anyone remembers this movie as being anything particularly special, or even above average.

So, if this wasn't it, does anyone know if Chuck ever did do a film that was actually considered a 'good' movie - 6 or higher?

reply

Well I would say the main reason Chuck has had a more consistant career than Seagal was because he (unlike the later) didn't burn all his bridges and doesn't mind making fun of himself occassionally. Also he moved to the more easy-going world of Television. Anyway, no Norris movies scores above a "6" on here, which isn't too surprising as the average IMDB user doesn't like these kind of movies. If you look at most other mainstream action stars from that era the results are pretty much the same.

I don't know if Way of the Dragon would really count as a Chuck Norris movie or not, because he only has a supporting role. Also, he has a cameo as himself in Dodgeball, but I don't think that would count, either.

aloep's post on IMDb earlier today claims it's a bias against Chuck Norris. I've also seen people say this about Above the Law starring Steven Seagal, which also has an average rating in the fives on IMDb (and comes from the same director). He said that the movie received generally "decent" reviews for the genre from the critics, and even the "not as good" reviews weren't as overwhelmingly negative as some IMDb users. The reason I am comparing the two is that they both star actors that are hated by critics (actually, most films in the genre are hated by critics), but received decent reviews for films of the genre at the time.

I remember people on the Above the Law board were saying if it starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jackie Chan, or another "better respected" action star, it would rank in the sixes, easily. I guess aloep was saying the same thing for Code of Silence.

Should be at least 8.

reply

Well, I gave it an eight. Along with "Lone Wolf McQuade", it has to rank as Chuck's best.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

I definitely think this is his best movie. Helps that a fairly big name guy directed it.
