Remake: Who would you want the cast to be?

First off, I'm gonna start off by saying that I love this movie and it was one of the familiar movies of my childhood (even though it came out in 1985 and I was born in 1990). I've watched this movie so many times over the years and when I found it in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart a couple of years ago, I bought it instantly.

However, since I've became such a big fan of this movie, I've wanted there to be a remake (and by reading some of the posts on here, there might be one....hopefully). While thinking about a remake, I've been thinking of who I'd like to see them cast.

So, here are the people that I think they should consider hiring for the movie, if it ever happens:

Colonel Mustard: Bill Murray

Why: I love Bill Murray, first and foremost. He's a phenomenal actor and is one of the best comedic actors of the last couple of decades. We haven't seen much of him lately but when we do, he's awesome. Martin Mull played Col. Mustard in the 1985 movie, so I was trying to think of an older actor that could portray Col. Mustard and I came up with Murray. He would be hysterical as the colonel and would make the movie worth watching, just by himself. (Also considered Jeff Bridges and Bruce Willis).

Mrs. Peacock: Susan Sarandon

Why: You really don't think of Susan Sarandon as a "comedic actress", but she's been in a few comedies in the last couple of years -- That's My Boy, Jeff Who Lives at Home, Mr. Woodcock, etc; hell, she was even in a movie called "Peacock" in 2010. Like Col. Mustard, I was trying to think of an older person to play her and I came up with Sarandon. She'd definitely provide a nice relief to the film and could easily play the serious points during the movie, as well. (Also considered Sigourney Weaver and Betty White).

Professor Plum: Kevin Spacey

Why: Like Bill Murray, I love Kevin Spacey. He's one of the best actors in my generation, there's no doubt about that. He is also very versatile, as he can perform well in comedies and dramas. Over the years, we've seen Spacey play in comedies 'Horrible Bosses' and 'The Men who Stare at Goats', along with familiar movies 'The Usual Suspects', 'Pay It Forward', 'American Beauty', '21', and many other movies. Additionally, in the last handful of years, we've seen Spacey perform in comedies more than dramas and he may continue to go that route. I think he'd definitely be a good fit as Prof. Plum, a therapist in the government. (Also considered Steve Martin).

Ms. White: Gwyneth Paltrow

Why: This was one of the toughest of the bunch, as I couldn't think of an actress that can play that somber, soft-speaking, crazy woman. Eventually, I came up with Gwyneth Paltrow, who somewhat played that type of character in the hit 'The Royal Tenenbaums'. Paltrow really hasn't been in that many comedies over the years, as she's been starring in both 'Iron Man' movies and 'The Avengers', along with 'Contagion' and 'Country Strong'. When you think about it, her last comedic roles that were actually a "hit" were 'Shallow Hal' and 'The Royal Tenenbaums' in 2001. Other than that, she really hasn't done anything in comedies. But, I believe Clue would intrigue her. (Also considered Courteney Cox).

Mr. Green: Will Ferrell

Why: I've always been a big fan of Will Ferrell, as he's gained a lot of notoriety over the years for being one of the most familiar faces in comedies in the 21st century; with hits 'Step Brothers', 'Anchorman', 'Talladega Nights', 'The Other Guys', 'Semi-Pro' and others. He's phenomenal in comedies, even though some of them are over the top -- but that's what I love about his movies. With the "main" male cast in 'Clue', it's just naturally assumed that Col. Mustard and Prof. Plum are in their 50's and perhaps even in their 60's, while Mr. Green is somewhere in his 40's, which is where Ferrell is. With the wide fanbase that he has, many people would want to go see Clue just for him. He'd be awesome as Mr. Green, as he was the first person I thought of to play this role. (Also considered Jim Carrey and Gary Cole).

Miss Scarlett: Marisa Tomei

Why: This was kinda tricky, but I eventually came up with Marisa Tomei. If the remake based their new movie off of the 1985 version, then it would be assumed that Miss Scarlett runs a "house of ill repute", if you know what I mean. When pondering that aspect, Tomei was someone that popped in my head, mainly because I had just watched 'The Wrestler' again, a movie in which she played a stripper. Tomei has appeared in a few comedies over the years, mainly 'Crazy, Stupid Love', 'Cyrus' and 'Wild Hogs' and will also appear in comedies 'Parental Guidance', 'Why Now?!' and 'Lucky Them' in the near future. I've always been a fan of Marisa Tomei and I believe she'd be able to play the role of Miss Scarlett exceptionally well. (Also considered Katey Sagal and Charlize Theron).

Wadsworth: Robert Downey Jr. (if they use the character)

Why: This was the toughest character to think of. I just couldn't, for the life of me, figure out who would play Wadsworth and play it well -- of course, all of this would depend on the director to actually put Wadsworth in the movie again. I was trying to think of an English actor, someone like Rowan Atkinson, Michael Crane (who plays Alfred in the Dark Knight series), Daniel Craig (doesn't do comedies), Jude Law, Hugh Grant and even Malcolm McDowell. But when it came to it, I just couldn't think of a proper fit. Finally, it clicked. Jude Law's co-star in the Sherlock Holmes movies -- Robert Downey Jr. I'm a humongous fan of Downey, as he is one of my favorite actors in Hollywood. Downey would be able to provide a certain amount of energy to the role, much like what Tim Curry did in the 1985 edition. Downey also has that dry sense of humor, but it's still hysterical. Downey has played in a number of great roles lately, especially both Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes movies, along with mega-hit The Avengers, Due Date, Tropic Thunder and Zodiac. Lately, Downey has flourished in comedic roles and he would undoubtedly be excellent as an English butler in Clue. (Also considered nobody).

Mr. Boddy: Vincent D'Onofrio

Why: As we all know, Mr. Boddy was assumed to be the bad guy in the 1985 edition. During the 1985 movie, Mr. Boddy was considered to be the blackmailer who was exploiting money from everyone in the mansion with additional informants. However, with the three alternate endings, Mr. Boddy was the blackmailer (Boddy) but was also the butler (to Tim Curry, who was really Mr. Boddy). When trying to think of who would play Mr. Boddy, who would likely not appear for very long, I was trying to think of an actor that has played an intelligent person in the past and who has also played some type of gangster. D'Onofrio has done both, as he has been mainly known by his character in 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent', a very smart person who delves into the mind of his criminals. He has also played one of the craziest roles I've ever seen, a murderous psychopath in 'The Cell' with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Lopez. There's no doubt in my mind that D'Onofrio would be an excellent Mr. Boddy. (Also considered Ray Liotta, Hugh Laurie and Bruce Campbell).

Yvette the Maid: Kaley Cuoco (if they use the character)

Why: Honestly, this was one of the easiest decisions I made. I love "The Big Bang Theory" and Kaley Cuoco, as well. In the original version, Yvette was supposed to be this amazingly beautiful, blonde woman (and she actually was) -- and that's what Cuoco is. Cuoco has been in a couple of comedic TV shows over the years, namely 'The Big Bang Theory' and '8 Simple Rules' (with the departed John Ritter). She really hasn't done much outside of that, with the biggest movie she was in being 'Hop', an animated movie with James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand. However, since she is familiar with comedies over the course of her career, I believe she'd be a good fit in Clue. (Also considered Natalie Portman, Malin Akerman and Mila Kunis).

The Chef: Conchata Ferrell

Why: There's really no explanation needed. She'd be a great fit. I just threw this character in here at the last second, because I was watching Two and a Half Men and she reminded me of the Chef in the 1985 movie.

For Wadsworth, I'd say David Tennant. If you want someone British who can play the part, I think he'd be the man.

Mrs. White- Jessica Walter - Someone posted her earlier and she'd be perfect
Mrs. Peacock- Helen Mirren

Mr. Boddy- Walton Goggins
Yvette- Kate Upton
Chef-Rachel Ray - Mainly just to see her with a knife in her back

Musical/Comedy:
Mr. Green- Harry Connick Jr

*- It's set in the 50's so a woman of color being a senator's wife may not be realistic in a pre-civil rights America. I don't care, she'd be funny.

Reverend Green (as he is here in the UK)- Tom Wilkinson (who was a splendidly comic and pious Pecksniff in Martin Chuzzlewit).
Colonel Mustard - JK Simmons - he's funny, and he's got the appropriately gruff, military-type delivery down pat.
Professor Plum - Benedict Cumberbatch (see below, re Wadsworth - although he has got form playing clever characters - not just Sherlock, but also Stephen Hawking - so this might be a better fit). Matt Smith might be a good, if somewhat obvious, choice - or, in the same "Doctor Who" vein, what about Tom Baker?
Miss Scarlet - Christina Hendricks. I'm assuming I don't need to justify this. See also Yvette.
Mrs. White - Betty White! Might change the dynamic between her and Yvette a bit, though...!
Mrs. Peacock - Meryl Streep - she's already played a cold, cobalt-blue matriarch in Thatcher; doing it again, but more comedically, shouldn't be a problem.

That's the main six; I'm not too fussed about the other supporting characters/victims, but:

Wadsworth - Torn between Benedict Cumberbatch and Richard E. Grant, as I've never seen the former do comedy.
Yvette - Kate Upton. Oh god, yes. See also Miss Scarlett, above.

I thought about this when I saw the movie just now, and the cast appeared totally clear to me.
For some reason I also think Woody Allen or Wes Anderson should direct it, since that is the feeling I'm going for with this.
Of course the movie would have to be a bit longer and have more room for character development, even for the minor ones and I'd cast celebrities in the cameos just for the twist.

Miss Scarlett - Emma Stone
Professor Plum - Robert Downey Jr. He would make a great Mr. Green as well. I can really see Downey and Emma Stone making out on the couch.
Mr. Green - Michael J. Fox
Colonel Mustard - Alec Baldwin
Wadsworth - Will Ferrell
Mrs. White - Scarlett Johansson For some reason I just can't unsee Scarlett in this role...
Yvette - Isla Fischer
Mrs. Peackock - Meryl Streep (Mainly because she's the greatest golden girl of Hollywood, but her comedic timing is amazing)
Mr. Boddy - Bill Murray
The Cop - Eddie Murphy
Singing Telegram Girl - Jennifer Lawrence ;)
The Motorist - Steve Carell That would just be hilarious.
The Cook - Kristen Wiig
The Chief - Tim Curry That cameo wold be priceless. I can also see Robin Williams doing this. I kind of want to add an extra character for Williams, since he is a comedic genius.

How did I not think of Christina Hendricks for Scarlet? Good call.

Wadsworth- Michael Caine (going with him as a more traditional "old butler" type and less manic)
Col Mustard- Christopher Lee (Sean Connery would've been perfect in the original film but has since retired so Lee seems like the next best thing)
Mr Green- Edward Norton
Miss Scarlett- Christina Hendricks and Marion Cotillard were both good ideas
Mrs White- Helen Mirren or Judi Dench (making the character more like in the board game)
Yvette can be some famous model

You'd be pushing your luck to even get a cast this good, so Professor Plum and Miss Peacock can be played by lesser known performers.

reply

Colonel Mustard: Jason Segel - loud, boistrous, and good at playing stupid. He may be a little young to pass for a retired colonel, but hey, it's a movie.

Mrs. Peacock: Jsne Lynch - one of my favorites for someone of the same age as the original Mrs. White. Plus, I always thought Eileen Brennan was a bit over the top and the weakest link of the main cast (Wadsworth and the 6). Lynch would tone it down some and still plays the part of cynical old hag pretty well.

Professor Plum: Ryan Reynolds - can and has shown the ability to play that fine line between creepy and funny. Not to mention his ability to deliver lines with seemingly perfect timing. Same remark as Col. Mustard regarding his age.

Mrs. White - Amanda Peet. There's been so many good options posted above by others, but all I keep thinking is Judith from Saving Silverman. Perfect fit if you ask me.

Mr. Green: Ed Helms. Saw this suggestion by others and instantly fell in love with the selection. Originally considered Matt Damon prior to that.

Miss Scarlett: Kerry Washington. One only need to watch Boston Legal or I think I Love My Wife to ascertain whether she could play the role of a seductive and sassy brothel madam.

Wadsworth: Vince Vaughn. This is one of the copule that took the longest to decide. Having just gone through lists of male actors, this one makes a ton of sense to me. Like Curry, he always seems to be witty, quick on his feet, and his facial expressions explode off the television.

Mr. Boddy: Don't really care. Considered a few people like Matt Dillon, Gerard Butler and some other guys. Nothing suited my fancy and I wasn't going to waste anymore time on one of the smaller roles in the movie.

Cook: Meh, not really worth the time, but since the OP included it, I go with Melissa McCarthy since she's currently my favorite plus-size actress right now.

Yvette the Maid: Nicky Whelan. Doesn't have the accent, but I don't care.

Clue:
Directed by Wes Anderson
Starring:
JK Simmons as Col. Mustard
Jeff Glodblum as Professor Plum
Paul Rudd as Mr. Green
Julianne Moore as Ms. White
Kathy Bates as Mrs. Peacock
Lisa Kudrow as Miss Scarlet
with
James Spader as Wadsworth
Emily Blunt as Yvette
and
Sam Rockwell as Boddy
Featuring Special Guest Appearances by
Owen Wilson as the Motorist
Edward Norton as the Cop
and Bill Murray as the Chief

Anderson's style would work well for the film. I thought of some of Mustard's tough guy lines and figured Simmons could deliver them well. Goldblum almost played Doc Brown in Back to the Future. Why not have him take Lloyd's role here? I don't really have reasons for Green, White, or Peacock other than I just think they would work. I feel like Kudrow could be darkly comedic in the vein of Scarlett. I just like Spader and Rockwell so I put them in, plus I think they'd work. I think Blunt could play the deceptive femme fatale role well. The Special Guest Appearance Actors were just Anderson regulars I liked. Any similarities to other people's choices are unintentional.
