VERY dated

I watched this recently for the first time, after 30 years of saying "I'll watch it some day." It was not awful, but not too great either. Although, in 1985 it must have been considered a masterpiece. Seeing all those 80s actors the other day, for example, was nostalgic, but in 1985 they were huge stars and audiences must have loved them. The jokes were boring too, but again, at the time, they were probably considered hysterical.

How is it dated? It was set in the 50s to begin with, making it a period film. Thus, no cell phones or flat screen TV. Hell, most homes didn't even have TVs.

Awooga awooga, abandon shop, this is not a daffodil!!!!

Actually. This film bombed in theatres and was critically panned. It didnt become a cult classic until the 90s

This thread makes this 22 year old groan from the so many things I detest about the way some of us think and act. I know it's not all of us, but gee whiz is it so wrong to wish we actually took some lessons from the past?

Surprisingly I've heard stupider reasons not to like certain comedies.

Dated? Surely you jest. This movie is timeless. It's perfection in every way. One of my top 10 films.

I hate that term dated. It's like someone thinks just because an older film does things differently it isn't as good as films made now a days. I don't even like most comedies today. They're all filled to the brim with sexual content.

If you hate the Amazing Spider-Man movies, you are on my ignore list.

I completely agree!

Silent Pictures, B&W Pictures, Pre-CGI pictures, they all look dated! Movies that are coming out now, will look dated in 30 years. For one reason or another.

And has been noted by many in this thread, this "1985" movie is even a period piece, set in the late 1940s/early 1950s. Calling it "dated", is like saying a film about Abraham Lincoln is "dated", because the people are getting where they need to go by Horse and Buggy.

GIVE ME A BREAK!

I am so sick of people complaining about movies that were "made before they were born" for whatever stupid reason...

If a viewer can't let go of their modern world of cellphones, and internet access, and accept that a "30" year old movie will looked "dated", before they even watch the movie, then they will NEVER enjoy it!

HERE IS SOME ADVICE, DON'T EVEN TRY TO WATCH THEM!

It's dated yet in an awesome way.

I love getting lost in it.

reply

No way! It doesn't 'feel' eighties at all! The comedy isn't dated & stylistically it's set in the fifties. I couldn't disagree more.

must have been a nostalgic year for Christopher Lloyd, he starred in two films in which he played characters from the 1950's.
