The DVD...

has TERRIBLE sound.

reply

That's funny. I'm watching this on an old VHS cassette right now and about one quarter of the dialogue is completely inaudible. I thought it was just because it was such an old release. It will find itself in the trash when I'm finished.

The picture isn't any better either.

I agree. I bought this DVD at Wal-Mart for $1! I'm not kidding. It was on a DVD with a black-and-white version of "The Tell-Tale Heart". The picture is half-decent, but the audio is HORRIBLE!!

reply

Sadly, my copy was the same. I really hope that someone will do the decent thing and put a decent copy of this film on to DVD or video.

reply

I purchased my DVD at a local supermarket for only three bucks and the quality of the sound was indeed horrible. It's a shame that a better quality DVD of this film has yet to materialize.

Q: What's the biggest room in the world? A: The room for improvement.

I got my copy from Wal-Mart for a buck... it's on the Digiview Entertainment label (as part of a "double feature" with a black & white version of Poe's "The Tell Tale Heart" from the 1950s)... and as everyone else is saying, the picture and sound quality are horrible. My wife was sleeping in the next room and the audio on the DVD would go from loud in one scene to inaudible in the next scene, so I had to keep the remote in my hand to keep turning the sound up and down as needed (and so my wife wouldn't wake up, haha).
Picture quality was even worse than the sound... dark, grainy, and indistinct. I've collected quite a few of these one-dollar DVDs over the past year and this is the worst looking of the lot (which was a surprise considering the movie isn't that old... I have a copy of the 70s flick HORROR EXPRESS released by the same label and it looks great!). It looks like they pressed the DVDs from a fiftieth generation VHS tape.

reply

I bought mine at Wal-Mart in Canada for $2.50...

It's released by "Quality"...Video is a pure VHS dub (compelte with Tape Creases and Noise) and the audio is horrible!!!

So much for Quality...

reply

my copy had horrible audio as well. I bought it for $5 a few years ago. After watching it last night I threw it away because it sounded really bad. It's a shame because as a TV-movie it's really good from the parts that I manage to hear from. Beck is very effective as the guy with no soul. what a slime bucket!
it was great to see a young Jill Schoelen. It was a shame I couldn't hear much of the scenes she was in. I hope maybe someday there might be a better release of this on DVD.

INDEED! i bought the $1.00 "double feature" with "a tell-tale heart" and the sound is AWFUL.

while the movie *is* pretty lame, i at least enjoy my cheesy horror movies with decent sound.

::sigh::

I've noticed a lot of complaining about the sound of the Wal-Mart DVD (and apparently other VHS and DVD releases), but I think I found a solution. I watched it on my computer with headphones on. After turning the sound up and down a few times in the first few minutes, I found an acceptable level to where all the speaking parts were audible. Sometimes it got a little loud with the music or some spoken scenes, but it worked out a lot better than through the TV speakers or home theater setup.

reply

..so I guess I should disconnect the 5.1 surround system from my DVD player and hook up my Grandparents Turntable Speakers from the 1970's to get a nice sound mix...

:-)

reply

I bought the $1 Wal-Mart version and the audio sounded fine for me. It's not 5.1, but I could hear ever word spoken.

Why blame a good turnatable speaker, for this audio mess?

Those speakers are great. My dad left me one of those stereos.

I also purchased a copy on what was advertised as a "Digital Gold Collection" and its basically a bad video transfer, with a very inaudible soundtrack.

I thought there was meant to be some regulatory board for this type of rip-off?

reply

Same thing with my copy.I got it from Wal-mart, it cost $3.98 but it came with two other films: Bloodlust and Kiss the Girls Goodbye. Turning up or down nothing helps unless I sit directly in front of my television. Meh. You get what you pay for.

reply

Lol, these prices are hilarious, I especally like the one above who paid $3.98.. for some reason, that price strikes me as funny.

Personally, I have the one released by "quality special products" in 2003, and I too paid some stupid amount for it.. somewhere between 2 and 3 dollars...

Anyway, the sound quality is a bit muffled and muddy at times, but isn't THAT bad.. the picture sometimes flips at the top like an old VHS copy, and there's some rather dodgy cuts where the commercials obviously once were... I didn't even realize this was a made for TV movie until I started watching it....

I liked reading how multiple posters had thrown their copies away for being so bad.. that made me laugh, too. I however plan to keep mine.

I,too, bought the dollar version at Wal-Mart a while back, and I just watched it this weekend. I've bought some low quality tapes and dvds before, but this has to be the worst! I kept adjusting the volume, thinking if I turned it down I would hear the dialogue better, but it was still muffled. Then when I turned it up the music was so loud I thought it would blow the speakers! Surely there is a way to restore this so the audio and video are audible/watchable. You'd think since Wes Craven directed this there might be some demand for a higher quality version of this movie.

reply

I kept mine too. At first I thought not to but, what is one to do?

OK, so is this movie considered "open source" cause there are indeed MULTIPLE versions of this flick on DVD!

My sister gave me a 4-movie set (along with Sleepaway Camp, Lucio Fulci's House by the Cemetery & of course...the original Night of the living dead..she bought it for $4!

Only movie I DON'T already have in the set is Chiller...wondering if I should open it for just one movie that potentially could look like cr.ap!

"Chiller" is crap but it is has some moments with a creepy Michael Beck...and it is nice to see Jill Schoelen (my buddy) but she and Beatrice Straight are wasted. Some "chilling" moments but mostly subpar Wes Craven.
