I hate remakes, BUT....
CHILLER deserves to be remade.
The sound and picture on the DVD is truly dreadful. And my DVD is supposed to be digitally remastered with Dolby stereo sound. That is such a big lie, that the person who wrote the blurb deserves to burn in hell. The original must have been shot on some kind of obsolete TV video format. It is worth watching because of the central premise of the movie and the excellent acting – especially by BEATRICE STRAIGHT as the mother. She is not even mentioned on the DVD cover. Shame on you. Mother love is another strong theme of the movie and leads to a clever conclusion.
Although I am an atheist, the premise of the movie has always haunted me. It must have been my Roman Catholic childhood. Chiller is more than just a good versus evil horror. I was always taught that the soul leaves the body the moment you die. So the idea that you can freeze the body and bring it back to life, when medical science has advanced, is an interesting and dangerous idea that is neatly explored by writer J. D. Feigelson.
This theme of coming back from the dead was also used in the excellent FLATLINERS, where Catholic guilt was explored. With the production values of Flatliners, a remake of Chiller could be a big hit.
