I got hold of a shooting script of this movie, as well as the movie storybook. Turns out the scene where Eva meets Viktor by the monastery was supposed to come after the scene when he gets that "necklace" from the gypsy and goes to the castle and observes her getting ready for the party. I don't know why they switched it. The Eva/Viktor scene would have been so much more poignant and touching in that context because you'd know that Viktor gave her Rinaldo's amulet thinking he was never going to see her again.
