why was it canceled

I'm not sure exactly why ThunderCats was cancelled. The production company behind the show, Rankin/Bass, shut down in 1987. The last series of ThunderCats toys produced by LJN was released in 1987. More toys were being developed by LJN but they were never released. The later seasons never aired in some regions.

ThunderCats continued to be broadcast in the US until the end of the 1980s, however. The show lasted for four seasons and 130 episodes. Many TV cartoons in first-run syndication only produced the minimum number of episodes required: 65 for daily syndication and 13 for a weekly series. Popular series might get additional seasons after reaching the 65 episode mark but the later seasons were usually shorter.
