New ThunderCats guide book!

Hi everyone. I'm the author of the first guide book to ThunderCats, the classic 1980s animated series from Rankin/Bass.

-------------------
HEAR THE ROAR! THE UNOFFICIAL AND UNAUTHORISED GUIDE TO THE HIT 1980S SERIES THUNDERCATS
by DAVID CRICHTON

Originally broadcast in 1985, ThunderCats has become one of the most enduring animated series of its era. For the first time in print, Hear the Roar! documents every aspect of the production of this iconic show – told by the people who made it.

Featuring over 80 exclusive interviews with cast and crew members, this definitive reference guide charts ThunderCats' creation and development, drawing on a wealth of never-before-seen production paperwork and leaving no stone unturned.

Dedicated chapters highlight the writing, animating, scoring and recording of ThunderCats, while a comprehensive story guide reviews all 130 episodes, including notes from the scriptwriters themselves! The legendary ThunderCats toy line from LJN Toys is documented too, and even the associated series SilverHawks is explored.

This essential guide to ThunderCats demonstrates why the show continues to thrive, while many of its contemporaries have faded into obscurity.

Excellent congratulations on such an achievement in producing such a book. But i have to ask you something?

After googling the title up, i gotta ask why you chose to go with a cover that has the plastic toys on it? Rather than say the original promotional series artwork with that rather inspired Frank Frazetta-ish fantasy artwork poster instead though??!

Even if articles cover the toys and whatnot and it devles intot eh animated series itself. If you seriously want a book to sell many copies upon being put onto the shevles. You need to put out a cover that draws you in and not some halfbaked attempt to sell us something that might be great but isn't selling itself with the cover that says buy me?

What you should've used instead for any new book based on ThunderCats!

"colour"

"black & white"

http://www.thundercatslair.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/15-promo.jpg

And maybe this one on the back to represent the new 2011 series reboot!

Anyways i'll be checking out bookstores and read up on what its like before buying but well done in any regards. ("thumbs up!")

Hi, thanks for your interest in the book. We'd have loved to have used the artwork you suggested, however you'll note the book is 'Unofficial and Unauthorised'. This means, in essence, that the book is not sanctioned or licensed by Warner Bros.

To make these kind of 'unofficial guides to...' books fully legitimate and above board we can't use copyrighted images (like the artwork you mentioned).

I am, however, delighted to report that this doesn't make the book any less comprehensive. There are over 80 cast and crew members who've contributed their memories to Hear the Roar! so it really is the story of ThunderCats as told by the people who made it and I'm pretty confident no book will ever be as definitive!

Many thanks
Dave

We you could've paid for a copyright, but i totally understand that route leads to massive payout to the copyright holders (Warners) and in this case for an; 'Unofficial and Unauthorised' title, you would've been ripped off in paying for any copyighted material.

Fair enough very understood.

Still you really needed a killer cover cos thats what also sells the title though business-wise you understand this right?! What if you paid an artist to independently make a superior one for a second-run/batch printing when that particular time comes? (i got weblinks if you want them?)

Also does your book cover the French version of ThunderCats which was called; "Cosmocats"! Do you also have and researched the Cosmocats book that was available with the french Thundercats/Cosmocats series DVD release? Hope this book of yours has some of that artwork and material cos it was incredible. I've got the PDF file of it (what T-Cats fan hasn't?) if you book even got a mere glance at some of that artwork in HD pictures within this book, its an instant buy for me.

And i know many more ThunderCats fans i can pass this onto as well!

Hi, as mentioned, unfortunately we simply can't use any copyrighted images (a category which any screen grab/original artwork would fall). Warner have absolute discretion as to who they award licenses, and a guide book wasn't something that interested them.

As such, I'm very pleased that we were able to create a cover that still reflected the series (and, I think, looks really attractive) without breaching copyright.

Many thanks, I hope you decide to buy the book, I really think you won't be disappointed...

Dave

PS. Cosmocats is indeed briefly mentioned alongside the other foreign-language adaptations.

Well its been close to a year and i finally got the book recently enough!

Browsed through it in Forbidden Planet then brought it. hope to go through it within the days and weeks ahead as it looks informative as you've said. but i've got to admit i wish you had taken some time out to address some issues with the book first though.

As i respect the fact in the pages you sound like you grew up with ThunderCats and got more curious to its production over the years and made the book as a labor of love than it merely just being a project as such for a publisher. As i think the book so far glancing over how you done it, is an incredible achievement in terms of dedication. But the book's design itself was done too much like a 'novel' when in fact you also had a small picture section inbetween the T-Cats guide book itself, when you didn't take the opportunity to practically litter images from the show in either; black & white or colour throughout the pages in certain sections where you could've done so to illustrate a point further moreso etc?

Pictures alone in the middle yet the rest of the book is nothing more than reams of pages to read in broken chapters wasn't a good move though, in terms of production. But like i said though, i've yet to read it entirely all the way throughout yet but i think i'm fair in saying that point stands though. If you ever get the change to redo the book as something much larger and grander in light of the recent new reboot ThunderCats series as well?, i'd hope to see those kind of changes to your possible second edition book's development and structure.

Please take this as constructive criticisms which it is intended and not a rant fest at all, as some others might've done. and yes i'll definitely be reading this ThunderCats book in the days and months ahead and give out a full lengthed review in the future or so.

Hopefully if you do have a second edition lined up though. You'll get brilliant artist to create a far superior ThunderCats themed cover to grab people attention, as its the main thing that makes any person pick a book up vain as it all sounds, sorry but the current cover is something that doesn't help sell the book as it stands right now.

P.S. Much respect to you on how you handled the Steve Perry section and covered his contributions to the ThunderCats series overall.

Nice to see that you gave him and the other writers their due with a section given to them and how they wrote for the series and developed it!

Well done.

Brother, your book is AMAZING!!!!! I don't think I've ever seen such a comprehensive guide to a series. This must've been a labor of love because you obviously went way above and beyond to uncover every last shred of interesting information and to track down every last person who had anything to do with the show. I especially appreciate how you let the writers go on at length about their careers and the writing process -- a great source for people interested in becoming writers as well as fans of Thundercats.

Thank you so very much, I cannot recommend this enough to anyone who appreciates this show!
