Is the DVD Boxed Set edited from the original TV Broadcast?????

I rec'd the boxed set of 'North and South' last Christmas and decided to sit down this weekend and watch it. It was a favorite of mine when it first aired in 1985. I own the VHS sets of part 1 & part 2, and I just noticed as I was about to give away the videos to my uncle, that part 2 (North and South-Love & War) is 570 minutes on the VHS, but on the DVD box it notes that it is 378 minutes! That would mean that 192 minutes was cut out???? Could that be that over 3 hours was cut out?

Can anyone tell me if this is indeed true, and if so what parts were cut out?

I am now hesitant about giving away my pristine boxed sets of parts 1 and 2

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My parents taped them all from television in the 80s and I own the DVDs. I have never noticed anything missing.

We never owned the VHS versions so I guess I can't help you with that part.

I just opened my boxed set last night after reading this post. Concerned, I put in each disk and selected the ending credits on each episode. The timer on the closing credits on EVERY episode was between the 1:31 and 1:33 mark, which is about how long a two hour TV movie was in the 80's without commercials. I am guessing there is a typo on the back of the boxed set (mine also shows a huge gap in length between books 1 and 2.) I have not had the chance to watch any episodes yet, but if there are any cuts I am guessing they are miniscule, based on the length of the episodes. And I can't WAIT to start watching my DVDs! (although the commercials and episode promos on the origional broadcast VHS tapes I have are quite entertaining!)
