Question about 'Heaven and Hell' book vs Movie (spoiler)

In the book version, do George and Madeline fall in love?

This seems so ridiculous, I wanted to know if the author wrote it or if it was added for tv. Book III was so bad I couldn't even watch it, I felt it was ruining the storyline of the awesome previous 2 movies.

They do, but not in the cheap 'let's-betray-Orry&Constance's-memory-by-getting it-on-so-soon!' way portrayed in the mini-series.

In the novel, it is 1876 and the centennial. It's been 11 years since Orry was killed and about 9 years since Constance was murdered. The closest Madeline and George saw of each other in that time-frame was Madeline consoling George over Constance's murder (acting more like a 'best-friend's-wife' friend instead of some 'Eddie-Fisher-let's-take-advantage-of-your-grief-and-get-between-your-legs' aggression; heck, Virgillia was more effective consoling George than Madeline!). Anyhoo, after the centennial celebration, Madeline and George see a lot of each other. They fall for each for each other, and stay together. Madeline, who had been writing a 'Dear Orry' diary over the decade, writes her goodbyes saying that her love for George is a different one than the one she had with Madeline, and she asks for his blessing. She closes the book and puts it safely away.

I was equally disgusted how the mini-series gutted those years of lonely grief and made it look like "Orry who?"

I don't know what book you read but that was not what was said. Madeline plainly states that she DOES NOT love George and that he's not "put off" by that fact. So no, they don't love each other.

To add to the previous posts, Virgilia was not executed for murder as in the movie. She appears in the book "Heaven and Hell" and actually saves Mont Royal from Ashton's evil scheme.
