Airing tonight on Encore

Heads up for other "North and South" fans, it's starting to air right now on the Encore cable channel. I haven't seen it in so long - excited!!

And if you own it on DVD, and like me you absolutely love it, it might be worth noting that it's being shown in HD as well as SD formats. That's the highest quality option yet for this Mini-Series.

This is actually my first viewing of this miniseries, I think. (I've had several seizures which affects my short term memory. Hell, I might've been in it and didn't remember!) There is one thing I'd like to get opninions on. To have paid the monies for all of the big stars that where in this, why wasn't any time spent on the actors' hair? There are plenty of '70s and '80s style hairdos. Look at Patrick Swayze...what a glorious mane of hair! I've also found this to be true on M*A*S*H. There were nothing but '70s dos.
So what do you think?

The West Memphis Three are free!!

They probably didn't notice. As you've stated, using contemporary hairstyles in historical movies and series is pretty much a norm back then. Personally, it's a detail I've decided to ignore in favor of story/characters/acting/direction, etc.

Gotcha. It doesn't drive me to distraction, for sure, but it is something that I notice and then file it away.

What angmc said is true. They didn't make hairstyles a big priority, esspecially big name actors/actresses, until sometime in the 90's. Just like you exampled, Swayze's 80s mane during a 1840-1860s setting and also all 70s hair in M*A*S*H set in the 50s.

You can even look at older military type shows and see how the big stars have somewhat normal looking hair, while the smaller costars are shaved bald. Like Bill Murray and Harold Ramis in Stripes

I am so excited. I missed most of it back in 85 and have looked forward to this since I found out it was airing. Then Book 2 and 3 as well this month. Its amazing all the stars that is in the mini series that arent with us anymore.

I actually missed last nights showing . So I believe I'm watching the 3rd part according to tonight's ENCORE Schedule ? No matter there is another showing of the entire mini series coming this Sunday February 10th starting at 10AM . I'm so glad an excellent cable channel like ENCORE is showing this little gem . It deserves not be forgotten as one the most memorable mini series of it's decade . Thanks Genesgirl for your subject post .

No problem :) It definitely deserves to be remembered. It's so good -- and addictive! I'm looking forward to watching every night this week.

Does anyone know if they'll be airing the sequels right after the first part?

I found myself distracted by the hairstyles, too -- especially Patrick Swayze's. But it does seem like forgetting the hairstyles was the norm back then. I think that when I see shows like "Little House on the Prairie," too. They all have such obvious '70s dos!

" Does anyone know if they'll be airing the sequels right after the first part? " ---- Yes Genesgirl according to the ENCORE Official Website Schedule both sequels will be airing - " North and South Book 2 " Sunday February 17th and " North and South Book 3 " Sunday February 24th . Unfortunately I don't know what times it will start or if it will be shown every day in the week like this one was . The website only gave this general information currently . Perhaps as it gets closer to the dates it will have more details . It is however something to really look forward to .

I just set my DVR to record book 2 on the 17th. It is playing all day. I don't know yet about the 24th, I can't look that far ahead.

If you have Comcast cable service, you can watch it via their on demand services. I think it will remain available for several months via on demand.

I just realized it was coming on so I've set my DVR to record all 6 episodes. I haven't seen it since it originally aired so I am super excited to watch it again. Even more excited to learn from the other posters that Book II and II will be airing this month as well. Yay!

I'm watching it right now, and it as addictive and insanely pleasurable as when I first saw it back in 1985. (Kirstie Alley and Teri Garber lay the ham on so thick it's still oinking, but perfectly in touch with what their characters are supposed to be.) "N & S" brings back many fond, if lurid, memories of that era. I loved the 80's!

Can't wait for Elizabeth Taylor's cameo as "Madam Conti."
