Question: Africa reference

When Huntoon is making his speech from the balcony after the election, a man in the crowd says "If Abe Lincoln don't like it, let him go back to Africa where he came from." Don't understand the "go back to Africa where he came from" reference.

I think its in reference to the fact that Mr. Lincoln worked so hard to free the slaves, sort of a jab.

In this drama, as in real history, Southerners were referring to Abraham Lincoln as a gorilla or as an ape. And, of course, many of them owned Negro slaves and looked down on them as only property, like livestock. So, the reference to Lincoln as coming from Africa..equating him with a an ape and/or a black person.
