I'm no expert on the costumes, but after doing some research on the Civil War era fashions/hairstyles in women (I'm a fashion/beauty fanatic), I do agree with you that at least for the women most times the hairstyles are incorrect.

Women in those days parted their hair in the middle, and bangs weren't common if worn at all. If you look at pictures of the women in those days you'll see that most often the hair is parted down the middle and flat to the head and no bangs (at least of the Southern women, I didn't do a lot of research on the Northern women....but I think there's a picture in a book of Matt Brady's photography of a senator's wife, Kate, I'm not remembering the last name, a beautiful woman, and I think her's is the part in the middle and flat).

The costumes were beautiful though, don't know if they were accurate or not but I have to say they were incredibly designed and amazing detail and artistry.

The women's gowns aren't correct for the most part. They spend far too much time wandering around in afternoon or ballgowns. A proper woman in the 1860s would have worn a bodice with a neckline up to her collar bone and long sleeves. You wouldn't show your forearms during the day.
Hair was mostly worn up, though some women did wear ringlets, and was parted in the center and pulled back, covering the top of the ears. Unless you were at home you would never go out without a bonnet (hats were generally for younger girls of around 18 or younger) and gloves.
And of course, no one was wearing blue or green eye shadow.
Sorry for all the info but I'm a Civil War reenactor.

The quality of the costumes is really good in the first movie, but I laugh at some of the 1980's-ness of them. The "Dynasty"-styled hair and make-up definitely send it over the edge!

No problem. It is correct for evening when women bared their shoulders and arms just not during the day time, certainly not in the 1860s.
