The Ending of North + South Book I

I was a young girl when I saw North and South the first time. However for years and years I have always remembered the ending of the first series. Orry and George standing at the train station before the Civil War begins, it pulled my heartstrings and I was watching the end on Friday of this week. I found myself weeping at the thought of it. I am reading the books and there are some differences but that theme of friendship is so powerful.

Agree. Great scene.

Completely agree.... powerful, great chemistry between these two friends.... I had to rewind it and watch it twice just the other day when I watched the series.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat"....

EPIC bromance.

That is such an emotional moment. The theme music playing softly in the background accompanied by those battle-like-drums. Their friendship is being ripped apart by the war that is about to start, they don't know if they will ever see each other again. Then they hug and the theme music REALLY kicks in. God I'm crying just thinking about it!

It was a great scene.

It was helped by the fact that James Read and Patrick Swayze had become very good friends off-camera as well.

I agree. Just saw that scene on Encore. I admit I teared up a bit. Great ending to Book I.

That scene makes me tear up no matter how many times I watch it! The way the music builds and the look George gives Orry after he hugs him..... What makes this series so epic is the friendship between those two. The story would be nothing without the love between George & Orry. Love this miniseries!

Oh, were they ? I've always suspected it. I know that Patrick invited James Read to his ranch and tought him to ride a horseback before filming started. I wonder if they stayed in touch after they finished working on the show !

I know they didn't film this in in order, but I alsonthoughtnthat final handshake as the train was moving was ad-libbed.
