If there is a remake, which it would be for the best if there is not, they will just portray it how the book did. Some of the southern characters were good, some were *beep* Some got away with being *beep* some did not. And characters from the north had their good and bad as well.
Jakes does not come across to me as someone who believed the institution of slavery was a good thing. However, he did not take sides in his book regarding the war. Do I think he tried to make racist characters look like nice people? No, I don't. For example, Justin and Ashton, Justin being one of the ones who paid for his actions, while Ashton never did. Jakes is more prejudiced in allowing his favored family, the Mains, get away with everything while his unfavored family, the LaMottes, all died, but they were both southern.
He also takes more time with his southern characters than his northern, imo.
So, I don't think they will say the south was evil, but I don't think they will say the anti-black people characters were good, unless they don't go by his books. Most of his racist characters were nasty in a whole lot of other ways as well.
