"Lincoln took an oath to preserve the union" -- FALSE

That's what George Hazard said in the movie but it's not so. Article 2 section 1 of the constitution gives the presidential oath and it says nothing about preserving the union. It does say preserve the constitution.

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

This has always been a problem for the yankees. They needed to explain why the south was not allowed to secede like the original 13 colonies seceded from england. America was founded on secession. The movie got around that by simply telling a lie.

Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union at all costs. He did say that if he could end slavery and preserve the Union, he would, and that if he could keep slavery and preserve the Union, he would.

Perhaps he took another oath, a private oath, other than the oath of office.

I intend to live forever.
So far, so good.

A private oath?? HAHAHA. You're grabbing at straws. The only oath that matters is the constitutional oath.

They shouldn't have started a war in which they got their ass handed to them

The Constitution has ratification language but no secession language.

The Constitution would have to be amended before secession would be allowed.

Can't have a constitution without a country.
