I watch it time and again
Mapp & Lucia is always wonderful. I can't get enough! Now I'm reading the books and seeing how much the series was true to them. Marvelous in every way. If only they had made more episodes.

shareI love it too! I usually borrow the sets from the library and watch them once or twice per year. Just love this series.
shareIt's pretty entertaining. The over the top snobbery of early 20th century England is pretty funny.
shareThere’s the snobbery and pretentiousness, hilarious for sure. But then there’s the rivalry between Mapp and Lucia — delicious! Their oneupmanship and constant diggs at each other are super-fun.
I have to admit that I like it when Lucia comes up the winner over Mapp. Both have grandiose ideas of their importance and need to be taken down a peg from time to time. But Mapp is too rude to the others in the community, talking down to Diva and Irene, and even occasionally the Wyses. While it’s obvious to the viewer that Lucia views herself superior to them, she is careful treat them without making that obvious. Mapp, otoh, relishes putting them down and simply cannot stop herself.
But isn't Mapp more honest?
shareLike when Mapp withheld how much rent she charged Lucia, and therefore broke her deal with Diva and Irene?
Or when Mapp rejected Georgie and Lucia’s artwork and signed the letter “Hanging Committee”?
Or when she stole the lobster recipe and denied it?
Or when she told Diva that Lucia came on to the Italian ship captain and crew?
Or when Mapp faked a pregnancy?
Etc. etc.
They both exaggerate, lie and fake. But Lucia’s are usually to aggrandize herself, like fake speaking Italian and going to great lengths to keep up the charade. Whereas Mapp’s “honesty” and some of her lies are usually to put down the very people she calls her friends.
On the other hand Lucia is always being phony nice. At least with Mapp you know where you stand.
