'It's Casual!' Probably the worst attempt at a catch phrase ever!

And I think very highly of Cameron Crowe's witing, but this annoying utterance made Johnny Slash's signature line on 'Square Pegs': "It's a totally different head" seem like a Noel Coward witticism from the 1930's. I think it may have been the inspiration for the "It's Rufus" joke in 'Never Been Kissed'. You'd have to be more stoned than the Tom Drake character to say something that moronic, and not expect people to roll their eyes at you, and think you are moderately mentally retarded.

It's casual!

I graduated from high school in 1983, and a guy in my class was already saying this all the time. I don't know where he got it from, so when I saw "The Wild Life," I thought it was already passe.

reply

It may have been coincidence!

I heard it too before the movie.

I can't people people actually said that before the movie!! This movie is so underrated :(

"It's Casual" isn't that stupid at all. Yeah, I wouldn't say it, but not that lame. Plus Tom Drake WAS "moderately mentally retarded."

It's a freakin awesome catch phrase. I loved it as a teen and still love it as an adult.

You Sir, are a moron! The O.P. couldn't have said it any better! Whenever that freak done said that stupid line, I just wanted to put him an arm triangle, then wake him up, then slap it on him again, then wake him back up yet again, repeat & repeat.........................................................

i have to agree with OP here..
the movie is outstanding and deserves far more recognition
BUT
it think Cameron Crowe was trying to hard to repeat his success from Fast Times and Spicoli's many catch phases that became part of the teen culture in the 80's.
Its Casual seemed like they were trying to force this catch phrase down your throat by repeating it over and over were as in Fast Times it was just natural that these phrases just caught on and remain part of the pop culture 30 + years later..

reply

it actually caught on at my school back then.. or its short version "It's Cas.." i still say it once in a while. chicks get a kick out of it, or at least, the kinds of chicks i like ;)

I'm torn with this post. It cracks me up because I do agree that it's a term that was really quite forced in the movie. And the Chris Penn character was trying to be like brother Sean in Crowe's creation, FAST TIMES. The thing is, I love Chris Penn and his character... So I just let the "It's Casual" be, rather than a catchphrase, more of a thing he does to get out of trouble, like "My Bad" has become.

Or something.

It was a bit cringe, but no movie takes the cake for this more than Clueless. I CRINGE every time I watch Clueless and hear all the stuuuuupid phrases Amy Heckerling was trying to make happen.

Chris Penn made it work in this..
