It's why Jim looked so disappointed when he left Charlie's house. That scene was apparently cut from the VHS release, but it is in the original theatrical version..

It was Jim wising up to stop idolizing war vets and realizing the aftermath. Maybe Jim joined the Army or Marines and became a Desert Storm vet or if even stupider, stayed in the military all the way up to 9/11 and by that time a Platoon Sgt leading a bunch of dumb soldiers
