Even in 1984, how would it be possible for a boy not even old enough for a drivers license that lives in a comfortable suburban home to befriend a 30-something Vietnam vet that is an obviously broken and emotionally scarred man that lives on the edge of poverty and shooting himself up with depressants? Where did he find him? I sure as hell didn't want to hang around a loner war veteran when I was that age!

shareWhen I was a kid I had a cousin who was very much like Jim. He loved the military, loved car and tractor engines, watched war movies all of the time and he even had a neighbor who was a former Vietnam veteran whom he befriended. So, yeah (specially during that time) it was possible.

Growing up there were about a handful of weird older guys who would hang around teenagers.
We called them the wack pack , they would smoke and drink with us. Buy us booze.

My god when I was a kid we would talk to any older male who was a vet..even if they were in their 60's and a vet of WWII. We were mesmerized by all their war stories, couldn't get enough!
