This movie is like a fever dream

Just watched it at 25. Felt like a fever dream. When it ended, all I could think is, "what the hell did I just watch?" Seriously one of the most surreal and tripped out "major" Hollywood movies I've ever seen. I don't really know what else to say about it. I can't decide if it was a children's movie or an adult's movie either. Just when you think "look at that cute monster thing," the dog jumps out at him and he stabs it and gets blood everywhere. Also the horse actually dies a horrible horrible death within like the first 30 minutes of the movie, lol. Then that knight guy who got iced, they show his burned rotting corpse. But then you have "look at my racing snail!!! yay!" style children's stuff. I have no idea who the target audience for this movie is.

I guess the target audience is 11-14-year-olds. At least the book is, but there is nothing that says you can´t enjoy it even if you are older.

Make love, not war! I've had enough of all the hate on these boards.

Like most truly great art, this has an open target audience, everyone of all ages.

This film wonderfully blends adult concepts and children's fantasy and mythology. A great movie to show your kids that will get them thinking about life a little bit.

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.

It's nothing like that, I knew exactly what i watched and what was going on, I was about 6 when I first saw it

How do you know if you're happy or sad without a mask, or angry...or ready for dessert

That's exactly how I feel! It's the perfect way to describe it.

Yes, i was watching it recently and finally got it. Nobody who saw this film as a kid forgets it.

The movie is studded with esoteric symbolism (Auryn/Oroborus, Moonchild, the dark mirror)an outline of the hero's journey (of individuation), the neverending story. The framing device of the story is carefully layered- Atreyu is Bastion is the audience. All those references to the 'human child' felt off & i knew for certain when the Empress cries INTO THE SCREEN at the climax for us to save her. Like an echo on an echo, going up layers, from dreamt to dreamer (Bastion starting awake at the beginning). So the movie is obviously fully conscious of its own movieness and uses it. Its carefully framed to speak straight to the dreaming mind. All movies are subconscious programmers to a point but you don't often catch one that's cognizant of what its doing to you (or else its advertising and just plain evil). Kubrick's flicks are the only others i can think of atm that are slyly self aware like this.

If movies are dreams than THE NEVERENDING STORY is a lucid one- by the conclusion Bastion has breached the divide and brought his dream (Falcor) into waking life, just as the audience is urged to bring forth the lessons of the film to their own. It seems more like a ritual than just a movie. I used to think fundy Christians were crazy when they complained about 'satanism & witchcraft' in pop culture lol

I first saw this as a little kid and still love it to this day. I truly feel that people of any age can enjoy it.

Well, it's not pure Hollywood... it's a German film, from a German book, with Hollywood money shoved into it.

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!

The Neverending Story is pure escapism . Good story line about imagination...
