Cult movie?

First off I'd like to say that whatever flaws this film has it certainly rates 7/10 and was better than any of the Superman films, the originals or the reboots.
It wins over there in a long way but not wasting too much time before Supergirl makes an appearance, the back story is over very quickly, perhaps too quickly.
But really with I think its a cult film is it's mix of Wizard of Oz fantasy quest/Superhero/teen-coming-of age/comedy action adventure film.
I know it sank without a trace back in 1984 as it looked naff but it certainly is a lot of fun and by the time this film finishes, Christopher Reeve is only emerging as superman in the dreadfully boring 1978 movie.
So come on, any else agree with me that this superhero 'quest' movie is a) a lot of fun and b) a cult!

Sorry, I can't agree with you about Superman The Movie. I love it and don't need action and effects in order to be engaged in the drama that set his character up. The first half of the film is a fine example of film making and the last half is where most of the criticisms come from...the silly Luthor plot, the deus ex machina ending, the change in tone, etc. The movie is a classic whether you like it or not.

In any case, while Supergirl has flaws, I still very much enjoy the whimsical movie. It has a great cast and is a lot of fun. I agree that it has a cult following. if it were truly awful, it would have been forgotten by now. But it wasn't. Even when Helen Slater was cast as the voice of Talia Al Ghul in Batman The Animated Series, everyone fondly remembered her as having been Supergirl!

In any case, attacking Superman The Movie doesn't enhance your points. This is a Supergirl forum, so stick to the things that make this film work for you and don't start trashing other things in an effort to make this stand taller. Quite simply, doing so works against your points more than anything. That's no better than ALIEN 3 fans who spend more time bashing ALIENS than talking about the third movie they claim to love so much. If you can't talk about something without trashing it's predecessor first, then what do you really have? Love or hate the previous entries, but they have nothing to do with the highs and lows of THIS movie.

Things I liked:

The weird exterior design of Argo City sitting alone in inner space with those strange artificial lights.

The love/hate relationship between Nigel and Selena.

The first conflict between Supergirl and Selena at the amusement park dwelling.

The invisible monster.

When Selena becomes all powerful and creates a huge fantasy fortress with Nigel as her prisoner.

The very strange, murky world of the phantom zone. It may not be in continuity, but it is neat in it's own way.

The final confrontation where the power of shadow turns on Selena. Cool demonic monster and probably what the invisible monster earlier looked like.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

Thank you very much for the reply! Plus the good advice, glad you enjoyed the Supergirl film and if you can see virtue in the Superman movie then there must be something in it.

On an interesting note, I just finished reading "The Dunwich Horror" by H.P. Lovecraft and the monster sent to seek out Supergirl very much reminds me of the thing in the Lovecraft story. Of course, I don't think the actual design would match the one Lovecraft eventually reveals in his story, but it's destructive actions in the film are very similar to The Dunwich Horror. Like I said, I think the creature most likely looked just like that demon entity seen at the end. Another similarity is that there is one scene that gives us a hint of what the thing looks like. In Supergirl, it's the energy bolt that reveals it's shape for a second, much like the alchemical mist sprayed onto the creature in the novella. I never thought I'd make a Supergirl-Lovecraft connection, but here it is!
