Bizarre TV Edit.

I remember seeing this years ago on TV, I think it was TBS and after the opening credits the whole Argo City sequence was cut out but it begins with the Omegahedron landing in Selina's bowl then shows Supergirl/Kara emerging from the lake without any setup or anything...this is how that edit of the movie begins.

Anyone ever see or remember this?

That sounds really unlikely, Eddie. You're talking a good 20 minutes cut from a film that's not that long to begin with! However, the scene you mention is confusing, as Kara emerges from the water in her Supergirl outfit, which doesn't make any sense since she wasn't wearing it in her 'ship.' I always feel like there was something edited between her leaving of Argo and arrival to Earth, but I don't recall ever hearing of a version of the movie like you've described.

reply

no there was never a explanation in any draft script for how she got her costume and it was never filmed either, she just ends up having it on when in her ship then she flies out through the water.

there were a lot that was filmed and was never released in any cut of the movie

the main one I want to see is where selina turns a protestor women to ice then shatters/melts her

this was filmed but for some reason not added to any cut of the movie, you can see this was filmed because when selina stops in her car with the protestors around the car that women jumps infront of the car...well shes the one who gets turned to ice when the protestors are put into the van we get a shot of them but a shot of selinas car and you see the big wet puddle infront of the car

reply

nope that is deffo not a cut of the movie, the main US cut had things missing like the flying ballet etc

the UK version was a lot better because all of the missing stuff from the US version was left in our version

reply

Nope. The TV version contained all the opening and introductions as seen in the US version. It did, HOWEVER, add the entire flying ballet sequence, whilst cutting Selena's party scene, and other moments such as the Power of Shadow sequence. This was the main U.S. TV version that premiered on ABC in 1987 and played subsequently on various other network channels such as TBS. I remember it played TBS once in 1992, and WGN a few times up to 2002! Haven't seen that particular TV version since though. Would like to. Kind of fun watching it in a nostalgic way.

But yes, the TV edit was, in some respects, bizarre indeed. It was one thing back in the day to add footage for money sake, and turn film premieres into a two night event, but in SGs case, it was a weird cutting and adding that I still find fascinating after all these years.

When will you ever learn, this feeling is all you can discern?

TBS and WGN retained the rights to air the Superman/Supergirl franchise of films in syndication. Over the years there have been various edits. The version of Supergirl I mention in this thread I believe aired early in the daytime on TBS I think in the early 2000s or late 90s.

You saw it in those segments and you think that is how it was aired. There was never any such version of this film that has ever cut the ArgoCity overature. Why on earth would ANY station do this? It's one of the most integral scenes of the film because it Gee, I don't know, SETS up the characters! No station, VHS co. or otherwise would ever cut this scene.

God, Pino Donaggio did such a great score to "Blow Out". I am sitting here listening to the score right now with a drink (nee: glass of water) and just engulfing every note in theory, practice and recognition of musical brilliance. Bravo to the man for creating such a masterpiece of a score!

And anyway, all of you people who are yelling out the windows like a bunch of those characters in "Network", need I remind you that the Binary Shute was designed so that Zaltar could travel to parts unknown, and he knew (just like all Kryptonian scientists do) that the other Suns of the Universe would give powers, and so the suit that was created for Superman, was created for him to wear and fly on his journey. But then Kara took the shute...and SHE got the suit. Beyond that, the skirt - the idea of "if the suit was meant for Zaltar, then why was it a skirt?" type questions are too petty and scarce.

This movie rocks - it is NOT without flaws but it is a lot better than most and the sooner people who worry about TV versions get over it - the better.
