However did Daryl Hannah learn to swim with that prosthetic?

Her 'mermaid bottom' sure looked difficult to swim in!
I remember when this film debuted, and so many people wondered how on Earth she could manage that.
Does anyone remember if Daryl Hannah or Ron Howard ever talked about that?

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

Apparently, she found swimming very easy and preferred to wear the tail in the water as opposed to on dry land which looked very uncomfortable. Mind you, it must take real courage to do something like that in the first place. It's one thing to dress up like a mermaid, but it's surely another to jump into water with your legs lashed together! I wonder if anyone's ever drowned doing something like that?

Supposedly she was so obsessed with the Little Mermaid story as a child that she learned to swim with her legs tied together

That's funny - I was obsessed with this film when I was little and me and my friends used to swim with our legs together like a mermaid - it's tough but possible!

I always wondered if that could be pulled off swimming with your legs together.

reply

I used to swim with my legs together, too. I thought that I could swim faster that way than individually kicking my legs.

Here, Hannah discusses the swimming scenes and the tail:

You can buy mermaid tails on ebay, so I suppose quite a lot of people must be doing it.

I'd imagine it'd be easy to swim in. I used to swim like a mermaid, the difference being I had to use flippers instead of one prosthetic. It's much easier

I know lots of people swim like mermaids and it looks absolutely fantastic and graceful, but for a non-swimmer like myself, it seems counter intuitive that you would dress up in such a way and get into the water!
