I mean seriously? reminds me of an old futurama epsiode where fry falls in love with a mermaid and is going to stay with her until its time for sex and fry asks how they are going to do it and she replies "well I lay my eggs on the bad and leave, then you come ago and fertilize them." lol.

I don't know exactly how it works but, she tells him when he talks about visiting his brother for Christmas "You can never go back"
Think about it, why wouldn't he be able to go back? It's because somehow she changed him into being able to live only underwater. Otherwise he could at least visit his brother for a half day or something.
You think the other mer people are going to accept a human in their community? Tom hanks is going to be a lonely guy with only madison for company most likely. He really gave up a lot.
That doesn't mean they can't go to the beach and frolic in the sand for a little while. "Going back" meant going back to New York City and visit Freddy and stay for a few days. He had to live in the sea forever.
