shareBecause of the story.
shareI don't think the 'PG-13' rating was around back then. (When did RED DAWN come out? I think it was the first.)
But by today's standards, it definitely would have been rated R by the MPAA just because of the f-words.
Well not definitely, but more than likely. yeah.
shareRed Dawn 10 August 1984
A Soldier's Story 14 September 1984
Actually Red Dawn came out first and this film is still PG.

"All the President's Men" used the "F" word and was still PG

my favorite f word was when he said:
"well why da f____ didnt you do anything?"
The first PG-13 movie to come out was the second Indiana Jones movie, which came out in May of 1984, so the rating was around at the time of A Soldier's Story.

Gee, my copy is censored. And I never even missed those f__k words. This movie would be PG today. I still have the original VHS tape that I sat on the video store floor 5 hours waiting for.
"Thus began our longest journey together." To Kill a Mockingbird
PG could contain nudity back then as well, just watch The Bounty or The Beastmaster. They said *beep* in Big, too.
A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous. Got me?
If the movie came out in September 1984, it's quite possible that the film was rated back in June or July of that year, before the PG-13 rating was established. Once a film is rated, it remains with that rating unless it has been recut.
Besides, this movie isn't really precedent as far as f-bombs in a PG film. See All The President's Men.

Some PG rated movies from the 70s and 80s would be PG-13 today. Although This film might be Rated R today because it passed the F-bomb limit.
shareIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was not the first PG-13 movie. Red Dawn was. Temple of Doom and Gremlins sparked the PG-13, but were never re-rated after the PG-13 was established. All the President's Men came out 8 years before the PG-13 was established.
I saw A Soldier's Story in the theater in 1984 and could not believe the number of F words and N words - even then. The PG-13 was firmly in place. "Dreamscape," another movie that came out around the same time, initially received an R rating but was shelved until the PG-13 was established, and then released with the PG-13, so the theory of a movie not being re-rated before release does not hold water.
A Soldier's Story would easily be rated R today. Just look at the Director's Cut of Amadeus as proof...Amadeus came out in 1984, the Director's Cut on DVD restored a few scenes of nudity, and presto--Amadeus is now an R-rated film.
The MPAA is screwed up. Quickly edited, in some cases frightening and graphic violence passes for PG-13. A few F words, nudity, pot smoking: Instant Rs.
America apparently is fine with violence, but uptight about sex, foul language that everyone over the age of 11 uses, and having fun.
Dude means nice guy. Dude means a regular sort of person.
Unfortunately, you can say racial slurs all day long and still come in at PG-13, but you say *Fck* more than once, and it's an automatic R. maybe it's time to reevaluate what's offensive...
