Certainly under-appreciated
Adolf Caesar was great

I would agree, even though the few times that I have seen him elsewhere, I did not really care for him for some reason. But in this movie, he was outstanding.
I also liked John Hancock, who played Sergeant Washington. He was the one who stopped the fight between Waters and Peterson.
Not at the time. This movie was a very big deal when it came out and had a LOT of press for its performances, Caesar foremost among them, probably.

Understatement. Unfortunately, for A. C. this is around the era, when actors of color, would receive an nom maybe 2 or 3 per decade......Louis Gossett Jr . Had just won his for officer and a Gentlemen. With R. G. carrying the film easy to market, and root for. Conversely A Solider's Story with a predominately African American cast, with a great Director Norman Jewision, at the helm. They still couldn't market it, properly. Later on it happened with Color Purple, though it did well at the box office. It was snubbed at the Oscars, even with Steven Spielberg at the helm
Fast forward 2012 Red tails with an all AA cast produced by the great Francis Ford Coppola. In an interview he said it took the movie 23 years to be made, no major studio wanted to touch it, cause they couldn't market it. And further more, it wouldn't sell in the World market.....
Somewhere in between in the 90's in beyond 2k. Halle Berry won M. B ( pretty weak role, IMO), Cuba Gooding Jar won for J. M show me the money ( another weak role IMO) Jennifer Hudson won D. G for playing herself essentially( IMO ). I single out these three performances, for the them being weak.
Jamie Fox won for his performance in Ray. Solid performance, in a bio pics. Morgan for Million Dollar baby( He was robbed for Driving Ms. Daisy, and Shawshank, but that was the 90's lol~ )
Denzel won for Training day excellent performance, Ditto Forest for Last king of Scotland, and Monique in Precious.....
Seems like Hollywood likes to give out Oscars, to people of color when they play a villain stereotype.....( Apart from L. Fish burn's performance in What's love got to do with it, no bigger villain than he). Or Sam Jackson as Jules in Pulp fiction
Sgt Walters character predates all of these strong performances......He just came at a wrong time!
Yep. Won't be seeing this in the American Movie Classics (AMC) lineup any time soon.
Objection, your Honor. You can't preface your second point with first of all.
I agree. Gone too soon. He was also awesome in The Color Purple.
