Was rape a normal thing back then ?

There's a scene in the film where guy rapes girl and the morning after girl wakes up having realised she was raped and she actually enjoys it! WTF? I don't get the popularity of this film to be totally honest.

reply

rape as in consentual drunk sex was pretty normal back then.

The reason she enjoyed it was she was actually the rapist.

Since Carolyn was a senior, she was older than Ted - most likely 18 at that time when he was a minor - and far more worldly than the virginal Ted.

You can certainly characterize drunken sex as rape, but it would be Carolyn who would be arrested for raping an underage boy and taking his virginity as well.

Forgetting the rape issue for a second, back in those years, most teens who had drunken sex didn't yell out rape the next morning after experiencing regret - they pretty much blamed themselves for their own bad decisions.

I wish people were smart enough to understand the world was a different place in the 1980s.

reply

Sadly, they aren't. Our school systems have failed, parents have failed, people having the ability to put situations into a historical context no longer exists, and not being able to realize the different between two people being drunk and having consensual sex as opposed to one person taking advantage of a drunk person is lost on the original poster. I give the original poster an F for reasoning ability.

She was dead drunk you wastoid, how could she ever have fun and agree to it. The guy had his heart set to pop her cherry.

reply

Pop her cherry 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

She was far from a virgin and literally went down on him while he was driving. 😆😆😆😆

reply

Okay, maybe I need to give it another watch.

reply

Yeah, she may have passed out first, but she sobered up enough to remember having sex with him. He was even more drunk than she was. It just took him longer the black out, and that's why he didn't remember anything about them having sex. Also, he was a minor, and she wasn't. I know that these days older women tend to get off of without any charges when that happens( just look up the plethora of female teachers that molest their students and nothing happens to the female teacher) but if anyone (technically) did the raping it was her. However, suggesting that an 18 year old (the female in question) raped a 15-16 year old (the wrongfully accused underage male in question) is bonkers. By that definition anyone who was a year or two older than their high school boyfriend or girlfriend would be a rapist. So, anyway, go watch the movie again and figure it out you wastoid! :P

They were both drunk. Two people getting drunk, and having sex is not rape. It's people like you that are the problem with modern society. People like you look for problems in everything so that they can get on their moral high horse, and preach like they are some kind of sanctified deity. People like you make me want to vomit.

Hello female poster who watches super hero movies in order to see hot guys, and yes Amen.

reply

Wow calm your tits and try not to make a mess if you were to vomit.

reply

Funny how both people being drunk never factors in and it's always the man's fault.

7 months later and the OP has never once commented on this post. Go figure.

reply

It seemed to me the girl was drunk enough not to give consent to sex, ergo it qualifies as date rape. I'm not the only viewer who thinks of it that way.

Watch again. The girl raped the guy..

He didn't remember the sex, she did - he was more impaired than she was. She was probably 18, he was prob 15 tops. She was more experienced, he was a virgin.

Reverse the genders and see how enlightened you are.

reply

This is correct. The OP is wrong.

In the early 1970s, when I was a virgin teenage boy, I got drunk with a twenty-nine-year-old divorced woman one night and she had sex with me for hours and hours. God bless her, wherever she is today!

reply

She must be in your imagi-NATION

reply

Kind of.
In this instance the question of rape wouldn't come up as consentuality would not be hard to prove since this girl spent most of her time drunk and loose. Next we can nail her for poisoning (the birth control pill), public intox, delinquincy of a minor and possibly grand theft it they want to pursue the not so difficult proposition that SHE stole the Royce.

The fact that an 18 year old girl can have sex with a 14 year old boy while he’s passed out, and you consider him the rapist should tell you how messed up your view is. The problem wasn’t back then, it’s now.

reply

I was going to say that Farmer Ted wasn't passed out when they did it, but actually ...

He didn't remember it AND he wasn't drunk. I think you're right, Hughes's notion was that Caroline went ahead and "did it" with Ted while he was asleep.

VERY problematic, but that was what passed for the moral landscape 40 years ago.

Same with Long Duk Dong ... no way would that caricature pass muster these days. Even back then, though, a couple of (progressive / forward thinking / "woke") critics pointed out that the GONNNGGGG that plays for Dong is comparable to playing "Camptown Races" on a guitar whenever showing a black character.

I'm Asian American myself, and his scenes made me really uncomfortable. But I was in my teens back when the movie came out, and what's clearly date rape today (by both Ted AND Caroline, against each other) did NOT strike me as problematic back then.

Guess we can be grateful for some progress.
