When I was a little kid, I seem to remember wanting to watch this on HBO but my parents didn't want me to because it was rated R. I ended up watching it anyways with them.

When Sheena was released, the standards used for ratings were considerably different. Hollywood has shifted gears more with the political climate than anything else.
Today's climate would demand an 'R' rating for the sheer amount of nudity, but in 1984, nudity abounded in PG-rated films, including "Baby, Secret of Lost Legend" (1985), which has native nudity, murder, and violence and was produced by Disney!
You may be thinking of "Sixteen Candles" (1984), which was originally rated R and then dropped to a PG/PG-13 rating when it was released to video.
That wasn't it. I was a very little girl when it came out on HBO. I got mixed up between R and G-ratings. My parents had a fit because Sheena was rated R. Unless it was a misprint in the HBO guide. I always remembered that it was my first R-rated film. But ever since, it is listed as only PG. Could it be that HBO aired a different version of the film? They did that kind of stuff back then.

This just seems like it should be an R-rated film. I haven't even seen the movie, but with a title like "Sheena" it just sounds sleazy. I'm surprised it's PG.
Sixteen Candles was always PG -13. The shower scene was a jaw dropper for my middle school chums and I. Sheena was PG. NEVER an R. This is one of many PG's that would be borderline R now. I even think that the original Bad News Bears would be close to an R.
Exactly, the ratings back then were pretty lenient. Back then, movies like Robocop were rated R. But if that movie aired now in theaters, half of the movie would be cut out just so it could keep that R rating.
If Robocop was to come out now in theaters, half of the movie would be cut out to lower less than R in my opinion and be rated PG-13 to increase the ticket sales and get the teenyboppers into the theaters.
The movie industry has gone down hill since taking the political side so they can avoid controversy with people in Washington and the senators and all of that. It really does bother me because I would rather watch movies of the past than some of todays movies.
I look at todays movies watered down compared to what movies were like in the 70's and 80's. I am 35 years old and will be turning 36 here in the next few months. Everything was a lot more open in the past compared to now.
Sheena was one of the first PG-13 rated movies. When the PG-13 rating first came out, female breasts were acceptable and Sheena abused the living crap out of that fact. Parental outrage over this unexpected amount of nudity in what was theoretically a family friendly rating led to stricter standards on PG-13 movies.
adm3333, WHY do you insist that Sheena (1984) is rated PG-13? It isn't; it's rated PG.
It is identified as PG on its web page on the IMDb; plus, on the screen, just before the opening scene, we can read: PG.
There is no hint of a stronger rating. I'll admit I am happy as a clam during the scenes where Ms. Roberts is nude, but that doesn't mean it merits a PG-13. This is not lascivious nudity with bumps and grinds. This is innocent, even artistic. I think the MPAA took that into consideration, when giving the film an unrestrictive PG rating.
i agree 'rockmail', theres another movie called 'ravenhawk' with former bodybuilder rachel mclish. it had the same subject matter as sheena but was rated 'R'. it had a small amounts of nudity; but maybe theres another reason why it was giving that rating?
