Depressingly familiar for a three decade old movie
Depressing because the same real-life woes persist.
Female Tarzan meets modern Africa: coups, resource wars, genocide, mercenaries, indigenous rights, conservation. Sure, the white savior aspect is (as they say) problematic but at least she's a protector, not the ceremonial leader of her tribe.
Very much like Avatar in the last act; more so than Ferngully, Pocahantas, Dances With Wolves. Started iffy but got really good in the end.
