Of course, this movie is deeply problematic, but one thing about it that's somewhat redeeming

I love how defiant the Nerds are.

Typically in this kind of movie, the outcast characters go through a major transformation at some point, learn to be cool, or toughen up physically. If it's a female, she'll get a makeover and everyone will discover she's actually a beauty and they've all overlooked her.

Not the Nerds. They aren't changing. Nothing wrong with them.

Interesting observation. It reminds me of the criticisms of The Ugly Duckling, that we tell to our kids when they feel misfit or made fun of. The moral of the story is supposed to be that you shouldn't make fun of someone for being different, because they may be actually more beautiful or desirable than you in the end.

However, the real moral is that you can "put it in their face" if you actually mature into a beautiful swan. But most times an ugly duckling simply grows up to be an ugly duck. Then what? Then where is the moral of your story? "Too bad, you didn't turn out to be a swan, you really do suck after all."

But you're right about this. They are what they are and they've embraced it.
