Is America too politically correct for a new Nerds movie or remake? A lot of the parts in the movie would probably cause protest and boycotts today. What do you guys think?

I don't even view "nerd" as being derogatory these days. Sure, just 10-20 years ago it was a put down, similar to calling someone loser/anti-social/unpopular, etc. but now it's essentially just a subculture like any other; it's now more acceptable to be a "nerd" (or geek, etc) than any other time in human history.

shareThey couldn't make that movie today. Some of the funniest parts would be considered offensive and all sorts of groups and organizations will be protesting. One scene in particular that made me laugh was when the nerds had invited the fraternity brothers to a party. He wanted to impress them so badly that he put on 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot...". Embarrased, Lamarr quickly changes the record.
BTW, I am a 45 year old black female and I know some people would be upset about alot of things. But this was the 80's and when we watched a movie we really sat back and enjoyed it and left our bullhorns home.
I loved Lamar's embarrassed gesture of apology to the Lambdas.

One movie, American Pie, does not a teen movie revolution make.
The 80's on the other hand, was indeed a bastion of teen comedies. You could say there was a veritable plethora of teen comedies, El Guapo.

shareI would agree with you, as much of the Nerds humor was racist, sexist, misogynistic, fat-shaming...and funny as hell. I just think the grand majority of directors wouldn't go there today.
Hell, at one point I said they'd never remake Arthur for the same reasons, not to mention 'drunk' humor just isn't the same in 2016 as it was in 1981...and yet, they sure did. Granted it wasn't nearly as funny and inappropriate as the original, but remake it they did.
And then....Ted came out. Leave it to Seth McFarland to completely destroy almost every..single...touchy/PC subject one could imagine:

"Retarded" jokes
Disabled jokes
Black jokes/stereotypes
Asian jokes/stereotypes
Hookers
Stoner humor

When this film came out the world was a much different place, if you asked a group of high school guys, show of hand would you rather be the starting QB of the Cowboys or the CEO of IBM (the film did take place when IBM was the biggest company in the world) most kids would say QB of the Cowboys. Today if you asked that question even the greatest athlete would say CEO. If anything the remake should be "Revenge of the Alpha Betas." Have a film where the football team has to fight for respect. Now that would be funny!
In the mid-1980s people were not easily offended. People laughed at harmless jokes about blacks, gays, women, etc. Today people get offended by everything and go so far to find things to be offended by.
So many PC groups today that love complaining about everything. It would be a PG13 piece of crap. Hope it never happens.

It is beyond pathetic how everyone gets offended by the slightest thing these days. The fact that they took The Dukes of Hazard reruns off the air because of the Confederate flag on the is a perfect example. Did Bo, Luke or Daisy EVER say or do anything racist? NOPE!
As a child of the 80s, people regardless of color used to laugh at racist jokes. Remember the "Truly Tasteless Joke Books?" We used to read them out loud in school. We would simply make sure everyone was OK before we started, and 100% of the time everyone said yes. The black kids would laugh at the black jokes, the Jewish kids found the Jewish jokes funny and never once did a girl find a woman joke offensive. Today you would probably get kicked out of school for just showing up with one of those joke books.
It must SUCK to be a stand up comic these day. Millennials would go into shock and have to be rushed to the emergency room if they heard Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy in the 70s/80s.
The list is way too long, maybe someone should start a post, of the things in this film that people would be outraged by today. The once scene that I thought was AMAZING was at the end when the Tri-Lambda national shows up and the big black guys scare the Alpha Betas and the funk music kicks in. I am sure that today the PC police would say that scene reinforces all the negative black stereotypes.
Yes. I don't know why America is so sensitive now. Movies were meant to be an escape from typical/political day to day life. Hollywood has no balls anymore with anything they churn out for comedy now. No more movies destined to become classics like Caddyshack, Nerds, Porkys, Animal House, etc. Those days are over [Sigh]
shareYUP! I was thinking recently about the classic original Bad News Bears. It was hysterical! Could you imagine how freaked out everyone would be today if a kid on a little league team said a bunch of racist words? Or the coach incorrectly saying the black kids name? Or the black kid telling the coach "don't give me any of your honkey *beep* And it goes without saying the coach giving the kids a beer to celebrate at the end.
Comedies used to be anti-authority. People laughed at racist jokes knowing those people who said them it would come back to haunt them. You are right, Hollywood has lost their balls. Which is why the vast majority of films I now watch are foreign. They are not afraid to take chances and do risky subject matters.
While I get the overall thought, I don't think it's as simple as today being "too politically correct". We're talking about 30-year old movies. There was a time a hobo slipping on a banana peel was funny but eventually that didn't work any more.
A lot of 70s and 80s comedies were slightly savvier than we give them credit for. They happened during a transition in cultural norms and a lot of things were comical in part because they weren't common. Take Mr. Mom for example: the entire premise is that the dad stays at home and takes care of domestic duties... and hijinks ensue. Now I don't think that could carry a movie. Would it be that funny that a man couldn't operate a washing machine with no other explanation than "he's a man"? I think no, and just like in Revenge of the Nerds, a person just being gay, awkward around girls, or having bad manners is no longer a punchline. Not necessarily because it's not PC but because it's not uncommon enough to seem funny on its own.

Hell if this was set in today's times, all Takashi would have to do is call Asian Lives Matter after the "do you know karate" jock strap haze. Maybe one of those guys can answer that dude's question.
