What was the MOTIVE and WHO was the killer?

Strangely enough this isn't a re-occuring question in here but thinking back on the film I can't quite put it together. Who murdered those girls and why for that matter? Obviousely both the mother and the son were involved... but why kill so many girls for no reason?

I figured maybe the boy killed some of the girls and the mother is trying to protect him which adds to the bodycount... but I don't know.

What did Dario had in mind?

Most people would think it was the demented monster carrying around a collapsible spear, but the astute know that it was the monkey. His motive was that the girls kept turning him down for sex, except that woman who gets the razor, but at that point he needed to eliminate witnesses (and had an eager young Jennifer as a replacement).

You're the moron, he was being sarcastic.

Hell, I ain't no quitter. I've been smoking for 30 years...

reply

No, you're the moron; "the monkey was female" was obviously the punch-line of his sarcastic reply to the sarcastic reply

Basically the killer - half-breed of a normal human and some sort of cannibal - just loved killing for its own sake. He (it's a son) kills some of the victims and his mothers kill the others who might be able to identify and recognise her son.

Psychological problems due to him being ugly and unloved.

Wouldn't his unusual looks make him easily memorable wherever he went? I can't imagine how he could get away with carrying out murders with few or no witnesses.

The killer of the girls was the little boy, the killer of Donald Pleasance's character was the mother.

You get the explanation in the uncut version, still have to pay good attention though!

First hint:
Inspector Geiger talks with the asylum's headmaster about being afraid of something that 'got in, not got out'. The headmaster talks about a nurse that 15 years ago had a incidence with one of the 'deepest level' inmates - and the deepest level inmates are basically monsters.

Second hint:
Geiger talks with the school's nurse about her past. The nurse shows her scar - she says that she was dragged in between the bars by one of the lowest level monsters when she still worked in the asylum. After that she quit the work.

Third hint:
The nurse's boy is a monster and about 14 years old.

Conclusion:
The boy's mother was raped by the monster in the asylum. She bore the child, which became a monster too. Affected by her child, which just was evil by nature, both she and her child started killing people.

both she and her child started killing people.

Good explanation. As usual, Argento gives us murderers who are too petite to carry out the murders as indicated.

who gives a damn - this film was a mess

Only to those who don't bother to pay attention in the first place.
