ending of the movie was bad

It seemed to fall apart as soon as they went to the older age, movie got alot more boring and it seems there wasn't as much effort as they put into the first 80% of the movie, maybe they were all tired at that point and wanted to get it over with.

could have been a top 20 movie if the ending was good

Yeah yeah

You're so right ;-)

You won't find many viewers that agree with you. Actually I feel the ending was excellent, intriguing and befitting. Also, I think the third part of the plot, the 60's, "boring" as you may find it, gives the 20's part (2nd) closure and explains completely the events of the bank heist and the immediate events that led to Noodles fleeing.

I was fortunate to see the three original versions in the 80's and the chopped one that showed in theaters in the US is next to incomprehensible, the longer European one is better but also lacking in substance and with a lot of holes. The only one that makes full sense is the latest reconstruction.

No, it wasn´t. There was a lot of depth in the ending and in David´s quest to find the one who took the money and the uncovering of Max´s betrayal.

The ending is perfect and easily one of the best endings of all time.
The last 20/30 minutes is captivating, emotional, intriguing and it has a plot twist. What do you want more.

Once Upon a Time In America is easily one of the best movies ever made.

I've seen the movie around 5 times over the years, keep coming back to it because there's a great charm to it, but every time the ending leaves me with a bitter feeling.

James Woods disappearing behind the garbage truck like David Copperfield? What the hell was that? Beam me up, Scotty?

I get the theories behind that and stuff, but in my opinion leaving that overly dramatic suicide out of the movie would be a much better way to end it.

But then again, I'm not Sergio Leone, so what do I know. Maybe I don't get something. Or maybe I should watch the movie 15 more times, get Stockholm Syndrome from it, and then I will learn that it's actually pretty smart. Who knows?

Read the Trivia section, it was originally much longer (8-10 hours) and had to be shortened to two then back to four for video release.

OUATIA has the rare gift of an open-ended, mysterious ending that wasn't just made up as a pragmatic gimmick for people to mistake a film as "deep."

Isn't that right, Mr. Nolan?

The whole ending was a wtf for me. I am left to believe that the 60s scenes were all just a dream. And the reason why I think that is because Noodles' one true love NEVER aged. It's 35 years later and she still looks EXACTLY the same? Leone said that he wanted the ending to be open to interpretation, and I think that was his clue that it was all an opium dream where Max got his, his friends were respectably buried in a mausoleum, and the love of his life was a successful actress who never got old.
