So I just popped in the new Blu-Ray release on Ninja III, and in the production photos are a number of photos of Sho's character battling other ninjas, garbed as he was in the flashback scene where he loses his eye...
Appears as if there's a little missing footage here, maybe even some more back-story for Sho's character?
There was indeed a MUCH longer flashback scene, which was inexplicably cut from the finished film. Part of it can be seen from about the 12 to 17 sec mark on this trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns7kuvWf3fI
The entire sequence probably would've lasted between 5 to 15 minutes, and would have shown Yamada (Sho) and his father being attacked by the Black Ninja's ninja group and Sho killing a bunch of them (some of the photos and the trailer show this). Then, I suspect, his father is caught and Yamada is forced to surrender and is tied up. We then see at least part of what happened next in the short flashback scene actually in the finished film. We can deduce from the pics and the trailer that after his father is stabbed and killed and Yamada loses his eye, he breaks free, bandages up his eye, and fights and kills all the remaining ninja except for the Black Ninja who manages to escape, and then goes to his father, pulls out the knife and swears to avenge him.
I was so hoping that Shout Factory's otherwise Excellent Blu-Ray release (fabulous picture quality) would have this missing scene as an extra, but I fear it may be lost forever. I was hoping that at least Firstenberg would mention it in the so-so running commentary, but he didn't say a word. Very disapointing.
Thanks for the link. Looks there is a shot of the evil ninja doing a backflip that I do not think is in the film either. In the commentary, Firstenberg mentions there was also a head spinning sequence during the exorcism that I believe the censors made them cut out. I noticed these shots in the photo montage also and was disappointed they did not mention the missing footage in the commentary.
