Final Analysis: Knocking the cover off the ball scene

Okay, this is one of my favorite scenes from any movie. There are just so many integral parts to this scene that all fit together to summarize what's magical about baseball.

First, the Knights star outfielder makes a lazy error causing the leading runs to score.

Second, the manager finally stands up to the prima donna Bump and sits him, finally giving Hobbs a chance at bat.

Third, Thunder growls in the background as Hobbs opens up his bat case, exposing "Wonderboy".

Fourth, Brimley(the manager) roboticaly tells Hobbs to "Okay Hobbs, knock the cover off the ball"

Fifth, Hobbs gets upset at the first pitch, a called strike on the inside corner. What, did you think you're going to get a break on your first pitch, Roy?

Sixth, the play-by-play announcer saying "Welcome to the majors, Mr. Hobbs"

Seventh, the umpires challenging glare back at Roy.

Eigth, the catcher's smile up at Roy.

Ninth, the actor who plays the pitcher actually does a damn fine job. He keeps his eye on the runner at first and nods in agreement at the catcher's pitch selection.

Tenth, Hobbs ACTUALLY knocks the cover off the ball. Cue the thunder, the uplifting music score, and the cover slowly plods to the pitcher. After the pitcher picks up the cover we see the inner core of the ball flap lazily out to left-center while the two runs score and Hobbs ends up sliding safely to 3rd base.

Great scene, a nod to the magic of baseball by actually knocking the cover off the ball, taking the old saying to a literal level. Gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it, which is a lot since it's out there on youtube for FREE lol!

Okay, fine, but umpires don't squeeze rookies out of habit or tradition. So Hobbs was right to look disappointed at the call.

Yeah, it's one of my favorite scenes too.

"I told you it was off." The Jackal

And the leather faced manager from the other team saying

"that's not a ball, we want a real ball"

It's an amazing scene for sure!

I know it's not Superman but this film and Superman '78 have quite a similar feel in terms of the lighting / cinematography and mythical status of the hero...
