Glenn Close - Oscar nomination?!

I just saw this movie, and while it had a very strong production, I wasn't very impressed. Weird story. I've always thought highly of Glenn Close, but I can't believe she was nominated for this movie. She had nothing to do. This might be the most unnecessary acting nomination ever. I'm not saying she didn't do a good job or that her character didn't serve an important role in the film, but she had nothing to work with. I think Kim Basinger's part was meatier, not that I would have nominated her either.

You're right ; terrible nomination. The character was completely drab and boring.

reply

Hey, she stood up and he hit a homerun...so...that's something.

reply

haha - good point.

reply

It's the type of lame nomination they usually save for an 85yr old actor\actress who is about to kick over.

reply

She actually remarked on this when she was on "Inside the Actor's Studio" saying she didnt think she deserved the nomination and thought the nomination was really more for the makeup and lighting crews work on her more than anything else. Nice to know she has a sense of humor about herself. lol.

reply

Ha - that is nice to know

Her nomination is surprising, so is the lck of nomination for Redford!

Its that man again!!

reply

"so is the lck of nomination for Redford"

Surely you jest? When I think of Redford's acting in The Natural....wooden comes to mind.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

Agreed. If they made the character more like the way she was in the book, I can see her being nominated. Glenn Close is a good actress (especially in Fatal Attraction). But as you said don-lockwood, she brought nothing to the table in terms of brilliant acting. I guess she was a filler nom that year, like Sally Field was for Lincoln.

reply

No argument here. I really like this movie, but my suspension of disbelief is fractured with Close and Redford trying to play 18-20 year olds early in the movie.

I think she made a big impact in two scenes in this film (the reunion scene and the scene in her apartment) and was more impressive than one of the other ladies she was up with. I agree she wasn't Oscar-worthy, but there's been much worse choices in this category, some of whom have gone onto win. Tristar did a big campaign for her, and obviously she was at the height of her popularity back then, having recently received two consecutive nominations, and she also won a Tony in 1984, which also helped advance her profile.

Yes, this Oscar nomination puzzled me when it was announced. Similarly to Alec Guinness' Oscar nomination for Star Wars.

Glenn Close is an excellent actress. I agree that "The Natural" was not one of her better performances.
