Kim Basinger feeding Roy something right before he gets sick?

I've always been confused why they show Kim Basinger's character feeding Roy something just before Roy gets sick and has to be rushed to the hospital. The scene seems to imply that she poisoned him, but the doctor says that the pain is due to the lodged bullet tearing up the insides of Roy's stomach over many years.

So did she poison him or not? If not, then why show her feeding him something just before? Was director Barry Levinson trying to be intentionally ambiguous?

Memo poisoned him. When he woke up later in the hospital the doctor told him that he'd had his stomach pumped for that, and up came the silver bullet (that Harriet Bird had shot him with years before). The doctor didn't say anything about pain, but warned Hobbs to stop playing ball to let the stomach lining heal because unless he did he risked dying.
