Why did that woman shoot him?

Just saw this for the first time but I missed some parts. Why did she shoot him?

She was essentially a stalker that was killing rising athletes. She was originally going to kill the Whammer but decided on Hobbs after believing him to be the best there ever was.

Did she kill the player whose story appeared in the newspaper that Robert Duvall was reading to The Whammer?

"Two more swords and I'll be Queen of the Monkey People." Roseanne

Yes, it was the same woman

I thought that at first too. But then I realized that would be idiotic. The smart move for him would have been to get the newspaper guy to bury the story, then start betting for Roy every chance he got. He would make a killing in the first month or two before everyone else catches on to the fact you don't want to bet against Roy Hobbs.

Because of this I am more inclined to believe she was just a psycho... I mean look how she dressed for the shooting!

Because she was a nut case.

what's to know?

She was mentally disturbed and yes she was the killer of the other two athletes because she used a silver bullet in all three shootings.

The incident was based on the real-life shooting of Eddie Waitkus, the woman who shot him was disturbed as well which, IMHO, disproves the idea Gus put her up to it.

Did you guys with the fixation on the silver bullet ever stop to think the Hobbs and the others she killed were actually a new breed of vampire, able to withstand sunlight?

In a world where a carpenter can be resurrected, anything is possible.

Actually the Silver Bullet kills werewolves, not vampires. Now if you really wanted to add an interesting twist to the movie, right after Hobbs hits the home run, have him turn into a werewolf while rounding second.....

Good idea Foster.
